EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: colorless
Warning! May cause severe eye and skin irritation with possible burns. May cause
blindness if swallowed. Flash Point: 52掳F.
Target Organs: none known.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
May cause severe pain and burns.
Skin:
Prolonged and/or repeated contact may cause defatting of the skin and dermatitis. May cause severe skin irritation and
burns.
Material Safety Data Sheet
Potassium Hydroxide 0.1-1.0N in Methanol

Ingestion:
May be fatal or cause blindness if swallowed. Kidney and liver damage may occur with possible heart or respiratory
failure to coma and death. Kidney failure can occur in non-fatal cases.
Inhalation:
Inhalation or ingestion causes narcotic intoxication leading to headache, cramps, severe pain and blindness.
Chronic:
Prolonged or repeated eye contact may cause conjunctivitis. Repeated skin contact may cause dermatitis and burns.
Methanol -- blurred or painful vision, conjunctivitis; possible mutagenic or reproductive effects.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures
Eyes:
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids until no evidence
of chemical remains. Get medical aid at once.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing
contaminated clothing and shoes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.
Ingestion:
Get medical aid at once. Give oxygen if respiration is depressed.
Inhalation:
Give artificial respiration if necessary. Get medical aid. Keep victim warm, at rest. Move victim to fresh air.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
General Information:
Vapors heavier than air, may travel considerable distance and flash back from source of ignition. Move container if
possible, avoid breathing vapors or dust. Flammable liquid is poisonous - wear respiratory gear. Use flooding
quantities of water as fog (streams may spread fire), cool all containers. Dangerous fire/negligible explosion hazard
when exposed to heat or flame. Hazardous reactions with strong oxidizers.
Extinguishing Media:
For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or alcohol-resistant foam.
Autoignition Temperature:
725掳F ( 385.00掳C)
Flash Point:
52掳F ( 11.11掳C)
NFPA Rating:
CAS # 67-56-1 health-1; flammability-3; reactivity-0
CAS# 1310-58-3: Not published.
Explosion Limits:
Lower: 6.7 Upper: 36

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
General Information:
Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Avoid runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to waterways. Contain if possible, absorb with sand or inert
absorbent, scoop into labeled disposal container. Shut off ignition source, avoid vapors. Isolate, ventilate spill area.
Label reclaimed spill material as flammable.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Ground and bond containers when transferring material. Use spark-proof tools and
explosion proof equipment. Avoid breathing dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Avoid contact with heat, sparks and flame.
Storage:
Store capped at room temperature. Protect from heat and incompatibles. Do not store in unmarked containers.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
Engineering Controls:
Use adequate general or local, explosion-proof ventilation to keep airborne levels to acceptable levels.
