EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: clear, colorless
Corrosive. May cause central nervous system depression. Flash Point: 57掳F.
Target Organs: none known.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Irritation to burns with corneal and episcleral destruction.
Skin:
Reddening and irritation, burns occur at sufficient concentrations and time of contact.
Material Safety Data Sheet
Potassium Hydroxide Solutions in Ethanol

Ingestion:
Ingestion can be fatal, symptoms of hypoglycemia, convulsions, shock, tachycardia, hypotension, vertigo, diplopia,
pupil dilation. Severe pain to mouth, throat, abdomen withvomiting, diarrhea, hematemesis, anorexia, dizziness,
collapse, coma and death. Survivors may experience perforation (gastric, esophageal), severe pain, rigidity and
hypotension; penetrating burns may continue for several days. May cause confusion, incoordination vomiting,
abdominal pain, uremia.
Inhalation:
May cause narcosis, CNS depression leading to respiratory/circulatory failure, pain, blindness, coma, kidney/liver
damage, cyanosis, edema, death. Coughing, sore throat, dyspnea, pulmonary edema.
Chronic:
Weight loss, cirrhosis, gastroenteritis, amnesia, tremors, acute myopathy, muscular edema and degeneration occur
from long term exposure. Respiratory irritation, headache, central nervous system depression (somnolence, lack of
concentration). Dermatitis, conjuctivitis (with permanent or temporary visual impariment), optic neruitis, pain and
atrophy. Potassium hydroxide-- bronchial irritation or pneumonia, gastrointestinal disturbance, conjunctivities with
possible corneal burns, dermatitis can occur.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures
Eyes:
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids until no evidence
of chemical remains. Get medical aid at once. Cover burns with loose sterile non-medicated bandages.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing
contaminated clothing and shoes.
Ingestion:
Get medical aid at once. Medical personnel may do esophagoscopy, irrigate injured area with 1% acetic acid to
neutralize alkali. Give conscious victim water or milk immediately to dilute alkali, allowing vomiting to occur. Do not
use gastric lavage or induce vomiting.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid at once. Give artificial respiration if necessary. Keep victim warm, at rest. Maintain airway, give
oxygen (medical trained only), maintain blood pressure. Move victim to fresh air.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
General Information:
Move container if possible, cool with fog or spray. Vapors heavier than air, may travel considerable distance and flash
back from source of ignition. Dangerous fire/negligible explosion hazard when exposed to heat or flame. Vapor-air
mixtures explosive above flash point. Avoid breathing vapors.
Extinguishing Media:
In case of fire use water fog, dry chemical, carbon dioxide or alcohol type foam.
Autoignition Temperature:
Not applicable.
Flash Point:
57掳F ( 13.89掳C)
