Section 3 - Hazards Identification

Emergency Overview
Appearance: Dark purple solution
Caution! Combustible liquid. May be fatal or cause blindness if swallowed or inhaled. Cannot be
made nontoxic. Causes eye and skin irritation. May cause kidney and liver damage. Contains a
central nervous system depressant.
Target Organs: Eyes, nervous system, optic nerve.

Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Eye contact may result in burning sensation, lachrymation, corneal lesions, vision loss or
impairment, pain or blindness. 5ppm and 40mg of methanol reported to cause moderate irritation.
Skin:
Skin contact can result in defatting, mild dermatitis, and staining of the skin.

Ingestion:
Inhalation or ingestion causes narcotic intoxication leading to headache, cramps, severe pain,
nausea, diarrhea, fever, and blindness. Kidney and liver damage may occur with possible heart or
respiratory failure to coma and death. Kidney failure can occur in non-fatal cases. Some symptoms
may be delayed for days. Large doses may cause hemolysis, hemoglobinuria, hyperglycemia,
glycosuria, renal failure, convulsions, narcosis, and paralysis.
Inhalation:
Same as for Ingestion above.
Chronic:
Causes blurred or painful vision, conjunctivitis, and possible mutagenic or reproductive effects. May
cause dermatitis.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures

Eyes:
Immediately wash with large amounts of water, lifting upper/lower lids occasionally (15-20min.)
until chemical is gone. Get medical aid at once.
Skin:
Remove contaminated clothing, wash area with soap and water. Flush with large amounts of water
(15-20min.) until chemical is gone. Get medical aid at once.
Ingestion:
GET MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY. Induce vomiting in conscious victim. Give
sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), 2 teaspoons in glass of water.
Inhalation:
Move victim to fresh air, give artificial respiration if necessary. Get medical aid at once.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures

General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH
(approved or equivalent), and full protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases
may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Use water spray to keep fire-exposed
containers cool. Water may be ineffective. Material is lighter than water and a fire may be spread by
the use of water. Vapors are heavier than air and may travel to a source of ignition and flash back.
Vapors can spread along the ground and collect in low or confined areas.
Extinguishing Media:
For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or alcohol-resistant foam. Water may
be ineffective. For large fires, use water spray, fog or alcohol-resistant foam. Do NOT use straight
streams of water.
Autoignition Temperature:

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
General Information:
Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Contain if possible, and prevent run-off into drains and sewers. Shut off ignition sources, provide
ventilation, and wear respiratory protection. Absorb with sand or other non-combustible material,
scoop into suitable container for disposal.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and wash before reuse. Ground and
bond containers when transferring material. Use spark-proof tools and explosion proof equipment.
Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and clothing. Empty containers retain product residue, (liquid and/or
vapor), and can be dangerous. Keep container tightly closed. Do not ingest or inhale. Do not
pressurize, cut, weld, braze, solder, drill, grind, or expose empty containers to heat, sparks or open
flames. Use only with adequate ventilation. Keep away from heat, sparks and flame. Avoid use in
confined spaces.
Storage:
Store as heat/ignition protected flammable, away from oxidizers and other incompatibles.
Electrically ground drums when transferring liquid. Do not store in unmarked containers.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection

Engineering Controls:
Use explosion-proof ventilation equipment. Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to
keep airborne concentrations below the permissible exposure limits. An eyewash should be located
in the area where this product is used.
