**** SECTION 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION ****

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Toxic if swallowed. Danger of cumulative effects. May cause
sensitization by skin contact.

Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye irritation.
Skin:
Causes skin irritation. May cause skin sensitization, an allergic
reaction, which becomes evident upon re-exposure to this material.
Ingestion:
Harmful if swallowed. Aspiration of material into the lungs may
cause chemical pneumonitis, which may be fatal. Methemoglobinemia is
characterized by dizziness, drowsiness, headache, shortness of
breath, cyanosis (bluish discoloration of skin due to deficient
oxygenation of the blood), rapid heart rate and chocolate-brown
colored blood. May cause central nervous system depression.
Inhalation:
May cause effects similar to those described for ingestion.
Methemoglobinemia is characterized by dizziness, drowsiness,
headache, shortness of breath, cyanosis (bluish discoloration of skin
due to deficient oxygenation of the blood), rapid heart rate and
chocolate-brown blood.
Chronic:
May cause liver and kidney damage. Absorption into the body leads to
the formation of methemoglobin which in sufficient concentrations
causes cyanosis (bluish discoloration of skin due to deficient
oxygenation of the blood). May cause anemia and other blood cell
abnormalities. May cause fatigue, dizziness, headache, insomnia and
weight loss.

**** SECTION 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES ****

Eyes:
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid
immediately.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Flush skin with plenty of water for at least 15
minutes while removing contaminated clothing and shoes. Wash clothing
before reuse.
Ingestion:
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical
aid immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious and alert,
rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh
air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If
breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Do NOT use mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation.
Notes to Physician:
For methemoglobinemia, administer oxygen alone or with Methylene
Blue depending on the methemoglobin concentration in the blood.
Antidote:
Methylene blue, alone or in combination with oxygen is indicated as
a treatment in nitrite induced methemoglobinemia.

**** SECTION 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES ****

General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. During a fire, irritating and highly toxic gases
may be generated by thermal decomposition or combustion. Use water
spray to keep fire-exposed containers cool. Vapors may be heavier
than air. They can spread along the ground and collect in low or
confined areas. Containers may explode when heated.
Extinguishing Media:
In case of fire, use water, dry chemical, chemical foam, or
alcohol-resistant foam. Cool containers with flooding quantities of
water until well after fire is out.

**** SECTION 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES ****

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective
Equipment section. Sweep up, then place into a suitable container for
disposal. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Remove all sources of
ignition. Provide ventilation.

**** SECTION 7 - HANDLING and STORAGE ****

Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Use only in a well-ventilated area. Avoid contact
with skin and eyes. Do not ingest or inhale.
Storage:
Store in a cool, dry place. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated
area away from incompatible substances. Keep containers tightly
closed.

**** SECTION 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION ****

Engineering Controls:
Use adequate general or local exhaust ventilation to keep airborne
concentrations below the permissible exposure limits.

prevent skin exposure.
Clothing:
Wear appropriate protective clothing to minimize
contact with skin.
Respirators:
Follow the OSHA respirator regulations found in 29
CFR 1910.134 or European Standard EN 149. Use a
