Toxicltv of Gasoline
Vapor

' The Ameriean Petroleum Institute
has completeda toxicity test ln whieh rats
end miee of both s鈧瑇esurere e:(posed unl-eaded
to gasoline vapor eoneentrations
of 6?, 292, and 2056ppm for six hours/day,five diys/week for approximately
two years. Exposure-related kidney damageand kidney tumors were observed
ln male rats, effeets not s鈧琫nin female rats or in mlee. At the highest
etposure level female miee developed ineidenceof liver tumors
an
atatistically gteater then that-s鈧琫n in.the eontrols. Generally, employeeor
erpos-ures considerablyless than the exposures
are
puU-Ug grven in the.animal
toxieity studies.

In eeparate tests, Standard Oil Company(lndiana) found that eertain
componentsof gasoline produeedkidney damagein male rats, but not in
females when the rats were exposedto vapors-for 2l days. A speeial blend
eontaining these componentsin a proportion similar to inat in $asoline
produced less severe kidney damagein male rats only. All of these findings
have been reported to the EPA as required by law.

There appearsto be a resemblanee betweenthe results of the StandardOil
tests and the API test impUcating gasoline vspors. However, other petroleum
hydrocarbonsand other chemieaGhave also been reported to produeekidney
damage in male rats only. The meaningof these findings is gbseuredb$ the
fact that untreated male rats can developkidney damagewith aging.

Althougtr the meaningof thesefindings in terms of humanheatth is uneertain
at this time, it is felt that these results are not a eaus鈧琭or alarm. However,
both StandardOil and the American Petroleum lnst'itute are conducting
further studies to determine any passiblerelation of the effeets seen t6 human
health.

{ y* have any questionsabout the tests or results, eontaet S. A. Elbert,
Direetor, Product safety (usA), standard oil company (Indiana),at
