Section IV 鈥? Fire and Explosion Hazard Data
Flash Point (Method Used): Not applicable Flammable Limits: LEL (Lower Explosive Limit) - N/A
UEL (Upper Explosive Limit) - N/A
Extinguishing Media: Use sand, carbon dioxide or powdered extinguishing agent. Never use water.
Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Fight larger fires with alcohol resistant foam. Firefighters should wear protective
equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus. At fire temperatures ammonium chloride begins to corrode metals and
may dissociate into ammonia and hydrogen chloride.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: During heating or in case of fire, poisonous gases are produced. Vapors may be
heavier than air. Vapors can spread along the ground and collect in low or confined areas.

Stability:
Stable X
Incompatibility (Materials to Avoid): Acids, acid chlorides, acid anhydrides and oxidizing agents. May react violently
with acids to form Carbon dioxide (CO).
Hazardous Decomposition or Byproducts: Hydrogen chlorine (HCl), Nitrogen oxides (NOx), Carbon monoxide (CO),
Carbon dioxide (CO2) and Sodium oxide.

Section VI 鈥? Health Hazard Data
Inhalation? Yes Skin? Yes Ingestion? Yes
Route(s) of Entry:

Toxic. Toxic if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through skin. May cause eye, skin, or digestive
Health Hazards:
tract irritation. Possible risk of harm to unborn child. Possible carcinogen.
(Acute and Chronic)
Carcinogenicity: NTP? No IARC Monographs? 2a (Chloramphenicol) OSHA Regulated? No
(National Toxicology Program) This agent is probably carcinogenic to humans.
(International Agency for Research in Cancer)
Signs and Symptoms of Exposure: Exposure to Chloramphenicol may cause nausea, headache, and vomiting. Irritant
to skin and mucous membranes. Irritating effect to eye. Ingestion may cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Allergic
reactions in hypersensitive persons. Phosphates are slowly and incompletely absorbed when ingested. Inhalation of dust
may cause coughing and breathing difficulty. Severe skin irritation or burns could occur.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Increased exposure to Chloramphenicol may cause anemia
and other blood abnormalities. Chronic exposure of phosphates may sequester calcium and cause calcium phosphate
deposits in the kidneys.
General Information: Immediately remove contaminated clothing. Show physician product label.
Emergency /
First Aid
Ingestion: If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING.
Procedures:
Inhalation: Supply fresh air or oxygen. Seek medical attention immediately. In case of
unconsciousness, place patient on side position for transportation.
Eye Contact: Rinse opened eye for at least 15 minutes under running water. Seek medical attention.
Skin Contact: Wash with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

Section VII 鈥? Precautions for Safe Handling and Use
Accidental Release Measures: Ventilate spill area. Wear suitable protective clothing. Remove contaminated clothing
immediately. In case of fire, use sand, carbon dioxide or powdered extinguishing agent. Never use water. Avoid
inhalation, contact with eyes and skin.
Waste Disposal Method: Dispose in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local environmental regulations.
Do not empty into drains, dispose of Chloramphenicol at a special hazardous waste collection container.
Handling and Storing: Keep container tightly closed. Protect from physical damage. Store away from oxidizing agents.
Keep receptacle tightly sealed, avoid contact with moist air and steam. Store only in the original receptacle.
Other Precautions: Prevent formation of dust. Ensure good ventilation / exhaustion at the workplace. Avoid prolonged
or repeated exposure.

Section VIII 鈥? Control Measures
Respiratory Protection (Specify Type): None required where adequate ventilation conditions exist. If airborne
concentration is high, use an appropriate respirator or dust mask. Use only in chemical fume hood if used in high
concentrations than product label.
Local Exhaust: 50 鈥? 100 CFM Special: N/A
Ventilation:
Mechanical (General): N/A Other: N/A
Protective Gloves: Proper disposable gloves Eye Protection: Chemical resistant safety goggles

Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Uniform, lab coat or disposable lab wear.

Work / Hygienic Practices: Follow the usual precautionary measures for handling chemicals / powder. Keep away from
food and beverages. Immediately remove all soiled and contaminated clothing. Avoid contact with eyes, skin, and
clothing.
