**** SECTION 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION ****

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Toxic by inhalation, in contact with skin and if swallowed. Danger
of cumulative effects. Toxic to aquatic organisms, may cause
long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment.Hygroscopic
(absorbs moisture from the air).

Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye irritation.
Skin:
Causes skin irritation. Harmful if absorbed through the skin.
Ingestion:
Harmful if swallowed. Causes digestive tract irritation.
Inhalation:
Harmful if inhaled. Causes respiratory tract irritation.
Chronic:
May cause methemoglobinemia, which is characterized by
chocolate-brown colored blood, headache, weakness, dizziness, breath
shortness, cyanosis (bluish skin due to deficient oxygenation of
blood), rapid heart rate, unconsciousness and possible death. Effects
may be delayed.

**** SECTION 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES ****

Eyes:
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid.
Skin:
Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of
water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing
and shoes. Wash clothing before reuse.
Ingestion:
If victim is conscious and alert, give 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Get medical
aid immediately.
Inhalation:
Remove from exposure and move to fresh air immediately. If breathing
is difficult, give oxygen. Get medical aid. Do NOT use mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation. If breathing has ceased apply artificial respiration
using oxygen and a suitable mechanical device such as a bag and a
mask.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.
Antidote:
Methylene blue, alone or in combination with oxygen is indicated as
a treatment in nitrite induced methemoglobinemia.

**** SECTION 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES ****

General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. Water runoff can cause environmental damage. Dike
and collect water used to fight fire. During a fire, irritating and
highly toxic gases may be generated by thermal decomposition or
combustion.
Extinguishing Media:
Use water spray, dry chemical, carbon dioxide, or appropriate foam.

**** SECTION 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES ****

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Avoid runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to waterways.
Clean up spills immediately, observing precautions in the Protective
Equipment section. Avoid generating dusty conditions. Provide
ventilation. Cover with dry earth, dry sand, or other non-combustible
material followed with plastic sheet to minimize spreading and
contact with water.

**** SECTION 7 - HANDLING and STORAGE ****

Handling:
Use only in a well-ventilated area. Minimize dust generation and
accumulation. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Do not
ingest or inhale. Keep from contact with moist air and steam.
Storage:
Store in a tightly closed container. Store in a cool, dry,
well-ventilated area away from incompatible substances. Store
protected from moisture.

**** SECTION 8 - EXPOSURE CONTROLS, PERSONAL PROTECTION ****

Engineering Controls:
Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped
with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate
ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.
Exposure Limits
CAS# 89-62-3:

Personal Protective Equipment

Eyes:
Wear appropriate protective eyeglasses or chemical
safety goggles as described by OSHA's eye and face
protection regulations in 29 CFR 1910.133 or European
Standard EN166.
Skin:
Wear appropriate protective gloves to prevent skin
exposure.
Clothing:
Wear appropriate protective clothing to prevent skin
exposure.
Respirators:
A respiratory protection program that meets OSHA's 29
CFR 1910.134 and ANSI Z88.2 requirements or European
Standard EN 149 must be followed whenever workplace
conditions warrant respirator use.

**** SECTION 11 - TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION ****

RTECS#:
CAS# 89-62-3: XU8227250
LD50/LC50:
Not available.
Carcinogenicity:
4-Methyl-2-nitroaniline -
Not listed by ACGIH, IARC, or NTP.
Other:
See actual entry in RTECS for complete information.

**** SECTION 12 - ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION ****

Ecotoxicity:
This data is based on 2-Methyl-5-nitroaniline. Estimated BCF value =
1.96. This value suggests that bioconcentration in aquatic organisms
would not be significant. Estimated Koc value = 277. The Koc value
suggests that 2-Methyl-5-nitroaniline would be moderately mobile in
soil. Adsorption to suspended solids and sediments in water and loss
of mobility in soil may result from bonding with humates.
