V. HEALTH HAZARD
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Carcinogen Information: None currently known.

ACUTE EFFECTS OF OVER EXPOSURE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Swallowing: The Acute Oral LD50 (rats) is greater than
5,000 mg/kg. EPA Category IV.
Skin Absorption: The Acute Dermal LD50 (rabbits) is greater
than 5,000 mg/kg. EPA Category III.
Inhalation: The Acute Inhalation LC50 (rats) is greater
than 5.01 mg/L/4 hr. EPA Category III.
Skin contact: Slightly irritating with skin contact.
Repeated or prolonged contact may cause
reddening, itching, and inflammation. EPA
Category IV.
Eye Contact: Severely irritating to the eyes. May cause
slight transient irritation. EPA Category II.
Chronic Effects: Nitrates cause dilation of blood vessels and
methemoglobin formation, which results in low
blood pressure and decreased blood-oxygen
carrying capacity.
Other Hazard: Those with a history of cardiovascular disease
may have aggravated reactions if overexposure
occurs.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Swallowing: Give a large amount of water to drink and
induce vomiting. Seek immediate medical
attention. Do not induce vomiting or give
anything by mouth to an unconscious person.
Skin: Remove contaminated clothing and thoroughly
wash skin with soap and water. Get medical
attention if irritation develops.
Inhalation: Move victim to fresh air. Seek medical
attention.
Eyes: Flush eyes with water for at least 15 minutes,
holding eyelids wide open. Obtain medical
attention if irritation persists.
Notes to Physician: Ammonium nitrate and urea cause diuretic
actions. Large doses may cause nausea and
vomiting. Acidosis may occur in the presence
of impaired renal function or during prolonged
exposure in persons with normal kidney
functions. Treat for methemoglobinemia.
