0016 BENZYL CHLORIDE

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance Routes of exposure
COLOURLESS LIQUID, WITH PUNGENT ODOUR. The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation,
through the skin and by ingestion.
Chemical dangers
Inhalation risk
The substance will polymerize under the influence of all common
metals except nickel and lead, with evolution of corrosive fumes A harmful contamination of the air can be reached rather quickly
(hydrogen chloride - see ICSC 0163), with fire or explosion on evaporation of this substance at 20/C; on spraying much
hazard. On combustion, forms toxic and corrosive fumes faster.
(hydrogen chloride). Reacts vigorously with strong oxidants.
Attacks many metals in presence of water. Effects of short-term exposure
The substance is corrosive to the eyes. The vapour is irritating
Occupational exposure limits to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract. Inhalation of the

MAK: skin absorption (H); Carcinogen category: 2; (DFG 2004). resulting in unconsciousness.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
The substance may have effects on the liver and kidneys,
resulting in tissue lesions. This substance is possibly
carcinogenic to humans. Animal tests show that this substance
possibly causes toxicity to human reproduction or development.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Boiling point: 179/C Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20/C (air = 1): 1.00
Melting point: about -43/C Flash point: 67/C c.c.
Relative density (water = 1): 1.1 Auto-ignition temperature: 585/C
Solubility in water: none (<0.1 g/100 ml) Explosive limits, vol% in air: 1.1-14.0
Vapour pressure, Pa at 20/C: 120 Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 2.3
Relative vapour density (air = 1): 4.4

ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
The substance is toxic to aquatic organisms.

NOTES
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested.
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical
effort. Rest and medical observation are therefore essential.
Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
An added stabilizer or inhibitor can influence the toxicological properties of this substance, consult an expert.
Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See section Occupational Exposure Limits.
