Chemical Safety
0336 THALLIUM SULFATE

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance Routes of exposure
ODOURLESS WHITE OR COLOURLESS CRYSTALS. The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its
aerosol, through the skin and by ingestion.
Chemical dangers
Inhalation risk
The substance decomposes on heating producing highly toxic
fumes including thallium and sulfur oxides. Evaporation at 20/C is negligible; a harmful concentration of
airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when
Occupational exposure limits dispersed.
TLV: 0.1 mg/m 3 as TWA; (skin); (ACGIH 2004).
Effects of short-term exposure
MAK: IIb (not established but data is available) (DFG 2004).
The substance irritates the eyes and the skin. The substance
may cause effects on the nervous system, cardiovascular
system and gastrointestinal tract. Exposure may result in hair
loss. The effects may be delayed (see Notes). Medical
observation is indicated. Exposure may result in death.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Melting point: 632/C Solubility in water, g/100 ml at 20/C: 4.87
Density: 6.77 g/cm3

ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms. This substance does enter the environment under normal use. Great care, however,
should be given to avoid any additional release, e.g. through inappropriate disposal.

NOTES
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested.
The symptoms of acute intoxication do not become manifest until up to several days have passed.
Specific treatment is necessary in case of poisoning with this substance; the appropriate means with instructions must be available.
Do NOT take working clothes home.
Card has been partly updated in October 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, Emergency Response.
