In case of poisoning by any exposure route contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre.
OBTAIN IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION. SPEED IS ESSENTIAL.
Swallowed: If poisoning occurs get to a doctor or hospital quickly, warning by telephone of the estimated
arrival time so that treatment is not delayed. If the patient is not vomiting, then administer either: activated
charcoal (100 g for adults or 2 g/kg body weight in children) OR Fuller's Earth (15% solution; 1 litre for adults
or 15 ml/kg body weight in children). A purgative such as mannitol or magnesium sulfate should also be used.
DO NOT delay the start of treatment. If there is a suspicion of significant ingestion then arrange IMMEDIATE
transfer to hospital following the administration of first aid.
Eye: Immediately irrigate with copious quantities of water for at least 15 minutes. Eyelids to be held open.
Remove clothing if contaminated and wash skin. Urgently seek medical assistance. Transport to hospital or
medical centre.
Skin: Immediately take off all contaminated clothing. Wash skin immediately with water followed by soap and
water. If the skin is damaged the active ingredient paraquat can be absorbed through the skin. Seek immediate
medical advice.
Inhaled: Remove victim from exposure - avoid becoming a casualty. Remove contaminated clothing and
loosen remaining clothing. Allow patient to assume most comfortable position and keep warm. Seek medical
advice.
ADVICE TO DOCTOR
RAPID TREATMENT IS ESSENTIAL. Refer to "The Treatment of Paraquat Poisoning: A Guide
to Doctors" (1994 or later edition) - available at most major treatment hospitals, Poisons
Information Centres, Syngenta Crop Protection Regulatory Affairs.
Treatment: Ensure airway, breathing and circulation are intact.

Control vomiting with either:
1. 5HT3 antagonists eg. Ondansetron 8 mg (5 mg/m2 in children) by slow i.v. injection or i.v. infusion
over 15 minutes OR
2. Phenothiazine anti-emetics eg. prochlorperazine.
Note: Dopamine antagonists such as metoclopramide should be avoided as they may impair therapy
for renal support with dopamine.
Administer either: activated charcoal (100 g for adults or 2 g/kg body weight in children) OR
Fuller's Earth (15% solution - 1 litre for adults or 15 ml/kg body weight in children)
NOTE: The use of gastric lavage without administration of an adsorbent has not shown any clinical
benefit.
A purgative should also be used (eg. mannitol or magnesium sulphate)
Rehydrate the patient to optimise renal clearance of paraquat, paying attention to the possibility of
fluid overload and electrolyte imbalance.
NOTE: Forced diuresis is not recommended.
DO NOT give supplemental oxygen unless serious hypoxyia is present.

CBA
Centa Brasindo Abadi

The lethal dose for man is approximately 2 to 3 g of paraquat ion (equivalent to approx. 30 mg/kg). Death
occurs by multi-organ failure and circulatory collapse within 48 hours or by a delayed proliferating fibrosis of
the lung within 1 to 3 weeks. Studies in animals have shown that repeated doses do not produce carcinogenic
or teratogenic effects, or adverse reproductive effects. The dietary no effect level in the rat was 150 ppm. There
was no clear-cut evidence of oncogenic potential. The no effect level was 25 ppm paraquat diet over two years.
Poisoning symptoms:
Swallowed : PARAQUAT CAN KILL IF SWALLOWED. Rapid treatment is essential. The immediate effects
of poisoning depend on the dose of paraquat absorbed in the blood. Mild poisoning occurs at <20mg paraquat
ion /kg body weight and the effects are vomiting and diarrhoea. Moderate to severe poisoning occurs at 20 to
30mg paraquat ion/kg body weight and the effects are vomiting, abdominal discomfort soreness and
inflammation of the mouth, throat and oesophagus, difficulty in swallowing and later diarrhoea. Kidney and
liver damage may appear 1 to 3 days after exposure. Can cause death by a delayed proliferating fibrosis of the
lung within 1 to 3 weeks. Lethal poisoning occurs at >30mg paraquat ion/kg body weight and the effects are
nausea and vomiting, and can cause death by multiple organ failure and circulatory collapse within 48 hours.
Eye : A severe eye irritant. Eye irritation may be delayed. May lead to ulceration of corneal and conjunctival
epithelium giving rise to secondary infection. Although healing may be slow, the injury is superficial and with
proper medical care will be complete, even in severe cases.
Skin: Contact with skin will result in mild irritation. Can cause inflammation and in severe cases blistering of
the skin. Contamination of the nails may cause white spots or in severe cases cracking and loss of the nail.
Normal growth follows without delay. Intact skin is a very effective barrier to paraquat. Damaged skin
removes the barrier and paraquat may be absorbed with effects as outlined above under 'SWALLOWED'.
Inhaled: Highly toxic if inhaled. However inhalation of vapour is not likely due to low vapour pressure at
ambient temperature. Inhalation of spray droplets can result in nose bleeds, irritation and soreness of the throat
if trapped in the nasal passage. Irritating to the respiratory system. Inhalation of respirable (very small) spray
droplets is unlikely however inhalation of respirable spray droplets can result in pulmonary oedema up to 48
hours after exposure and could prove fatal. This product contains a stenching agent to give an offensive smell.
This has been done to reduce the likelihood of accidental ingestion. This stenching agent may cause headaches
and nausea in some people when inhaled. The presence of this offensive smell in the air does not necessarily
indicate the presence of paraquat.
CHRONIC
No information available

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Paraquat dichloride : fish 96 hr LC 50 55 mg/l Rainbow trout (static), 2.5-13 mg/l brown trout. Hens 262 -
380mg/kg. Paraquat is rapidly absorbed and inactivated by contact with soil. There is evidence of
photodegradation in air.

13. SPILLS AND DISPOSAL CONSIDERATIONS

In case of spillage it is important to take all steps necessary to:
路 Avoid eye and skin contact.
路 Avoid contamination of waterways
Procedure for spill:
(1) Keep all bystanders away.
(2) Rapid decontamination of paraquat is essential.
(3) Wear goggles, half face-piece respirator with combined dust and vapour cartridge, full length clothing,
apron and PVC gloves.
(4) Reposition any leaking containers so as to minimise further leakage. Prevent runoff into drains and
waterways.
(5) Dam and absorb spill with an absorbent material (e.g. sand or soil).
(6) Shovel the absorbed spill into drums. Ensure area is completely clean and not damp otherwise repeat
procedure.
(7) Contain in a secure location until disposal method is established.
(8) Decontaminate the spill area with detergent and water and rinse with water
(9) Prevent runoff from entering drains and waterways
CBA
Centa Brasindo Abadi

Dispose of empty, used containers by:
(a) Triple rinse or preferably pressure rinse containers with water. Add the rinsings to the spray tank. DO NOT
dispose of undiluted chemicals on site.
(b) If recycling, replace cap and return clean containers to recycler or designated collection point.
(c) If not recycling, break, crush or puncture and bury empty containers in a local authority landfill. If no
landfill is available, bury the containers below 500 mm in a disposal pit specifically marked and set up for
this purpose clear of waterways, desirable vegetation and tree roots.
(d) Burning of empty containers, when properly cleaned, if circumstances, especially wind direction, permit is
an alternative method.

14. REGULATORY INFORMATION

The transport and usage should obey Indonesian law and the law and regulatory of the buyers country and state
