3 HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION

Emergency Overview

Light yellow viscous liquid

WARNING!
CAUSES EYE AND SKIN IRRITATION. MAY CAUSE ALLERGIC SKIN REACTION.
MAY CAUSE RESPIRATORY TRACT IRRITATION.

Potential Health Effects

Inhalation and skin contact are expected to be the primary routes of occupational exposure to this material. Based on
its composition, it is anticipated to be irritating to eyes and skin. Prolonged or repeated contact removes oils from the
skin and may dry skin and cause irritation, redness and rash. High vapor concentrations may be irritating to the eyes
and respiratory tract, and may result in central nervous system (CNS) effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea,

drowsiness and, in severe exposures, loss of consciousness and death. Precautions should be taken to limit
aerosolization or misting of this material, as repeated exposure to high concentrations of mineral oil mist may cause
lipoid pneumonia. Mild to severe lung injury may occur if this material is drawn into the lungs (aspirated) during
swallowing, or during vomiting after swallowing. Symptoms of injury may include increased breathing and heart rate,
coughing and related signs of respiratory distress.

4 FIRST AID MEASURES

IF SWALLOWED, do NOT induce vomiting. Give water to drink. Get medical attention immediately. NEVER
GIVE ANYTHING BY MOUTH TO AN UNCONSCIOUS PERSON.

IF INHALED, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give
oxygen. Get medical attention immediately.

IF IN EYES, immediately flush with plenty of water. Get medical attention if irritation persists.

IF ON SKIN, immediately wash with soap and plenty of water. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.
Get medical attention if symptoms occur. Wash clothing before reuse. Thoroughly clean shoes before reuse.

Fire Fighting Instructions
Fire fighters and others who may be exposed to products of combustion should wear full fire fighting turn out
gear (full Bunker Gear) and self-contained breathing apparatus (pressure demand NIOSH approved or
equivalent). Fire fighting equipment should be thoroughly decontaminated after use. This material is not
flammable. However, as in fighting any fire, fire fighters and others who may be exposed to products of
combustion should wear full fire fighting gear (full Bunker Gear) and self-contained breathing apparatus
(pressure demand NIOSH approved of equivalent). Fire fighting equipment should be thoroughly
decontaminated after use.

Fire and Explosion Hazards
None known.

6 ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES

In Case of Spill or Leak
Isolate hazard area and deny entry to unnecessary or unprotected personnel. Contain spilled liquid with
sand or earth. Clean up spill immediately, observing precautions in the Personal Protection section of
MSDS. Avoid runoff into storm sewers and ditches which lead to waterways.

7 HANDLING AND STORAGE

Handling
Avoid breathing vapor.
Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
Do not taste or swallow.
Use only with adequate ventilation.
Keep container closed.
Wash thoroughly after handling.
Emptied container retains vapor and product residue. Observe all labeled safeguards until container is
cleaned, reconditioned or destroyed.

Storage
This material is not hazardous under normal storage conditions; however, material should be stored in
closed containers, in a secure area to prevent container damage and subsequent spillage.

8 EXPOSURE CONTROLS / PERSONAL PROTECTION

Engineering Controls
Investigate engineering techniques to reduce exposures. Provide ventilation if necessary to minimize
exposures. If practical, use local mechanical exhaust ventilation at sources of air contamination such as
open process equipment.

Eye / Face Protection
Where there is potential for eye contact, wear chemical goggles and have eye flushing equipment available.

Skin Protection
Gloves should be worn when handling this material. Wear chemical goggles, a face shield, and chemical
resistant clothing such as a rubber apron when splashing may occur. Rinse immediately if skin is
contaminated. Remove contaminated clothing promptly and wash before reuse. Clean protective equipment
before reuse. Provide a safety shower at any location where skin contact can occur. Wash skin thoroughly
after handling.

Respiratory Protection
Where airborne exposure is likely, use NIOSH approved respiratory protection equipment appropriate to the
material and/or its components. If exposures cannot be kept at a minimum with engineering controls, consult
respirator manufacturer to determine appropriate type equipment for a given application. Observe respirator
use limitations specified by NIOSH or the manufacturer. For emergency and other conditions where there
may be a potential for significant exposure, use an approved full face positive-pressure, self-contained
breathing apparatus or positive-pressure airline with auxiliary self-contained air supply. Respiratory
protection programs must comply with 29 CFR 搂 1910.134.

11 TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Toxicological Information
Data on this material and/or its components are summarized below.

Petroleum Distillate
Single exposure (acute) studies indicate that this material is practically non-toxic if swallowed (rat LD50 >5,000
mg/kg), no more than slightly toxic if absorbed through skin (rabbit LD50 >2,000 mg/kg), practically non-irritating
to rabbit eyes (0.1/110.0; hydrotreated light naphthenic distillates) and severely irritating to rabbit skin (24-hr
exposure, 5.25/8.0; hydrotreated light naphthenic distillates).

Hydrotreated light naphthenic distillates have produced both positive and negative results in sensitization tests
with guinea pigs. Repeated application of a hydrotreated light naphthenic distillate to the skin of mice produced
effects in males such as testicular atrophy and aspermatogenesis at the highest dose level. Early mortality,
amyloidosis (infiltration of the liver, spleen, kidneys and other tissues with a starchlike substance) and irritation
were observed in mice dermally treated with a hydrotreated light naphthenic distillate or a hydrotreated middle
petroleum distillate for 177 days. Lifetime application of a hydrotreated middle petroleum distillate or a
hydrotreated light naphthenic distillate to the skin of mice produced tumors. One hydrotreated middle petroleum
distillate has produced genetic changes in a standard test using bacterial cells; however, no genetic changes
were observed with another hydrotreated middle petroleum distillate in a standard test using animals.

Thioglycol
Single exposure (acute) studies indicate that this material is moderately toxic if swallowed (rat LD50 241-345
mg/kg), highly toxic if absorbed through skin (rabbit LD50 150-200 mg/kg), slightly toxic if inhaled (rat 4-hr LC50
625 ppm), and severely irritating to rabbit eyes and skin.

Skin allergy was observed in guinea pigs following repeated exposure. No birth defects were observed in the
offspring of rats exposed orally during pregnancy, although slight adverse effects on the fetus were observed.
No genetic changes were observed in tests using bacteria or human cells. Both positive and negative results
were observed in tests using animal cells and animals.

Mercaptan
Single exposure (acute) studies indicate that this material is no more than slightly toxic if swallowed (rat LD50
>800 mg/kg), absorbed through skin (rabbit LD50 >1,000 mg/kg) or inhaled (rat 1-hr LC50 >5.1 mg/l) and
slightly irritating to rabbit eyes (2.89/110.0).

Signs of gastrointestinal tract irritation were observed in rats given single oral doses (>1200 mg/kg). Acute
inhalation (up to 5.1 mg/l for 1-hr) produced slight secretory increases (nasal discharge) in rats.
