Chemical Safety
0095 ALLYL ALCOHOL
IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance Routes of exposure
COLOURLESS LIQUID, WITH PUNGENT ODOUR. The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its
vapour, through the skin and by ingestion.
Chemical dangers
Inhalation risk
Reacts with carbon tetrachloride, nitric acid, chlorosulphonic acid
causing fire and explosion hazard. A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on
evaporation of this substance at 20/C.
Occupational exposure limits
Effects of short-term exposure
TLV: 0.5 ppm as TWA; (skin); A4 (not classifiable as a human
carcinogen); (ACGIH 2004). Lachrymation. The substance is irritating to the eyes, the skin and
MAK: skin absorption (H); Carcinogen category: 3B; (DFG 2004). the respiratory tract. The substance may cause effects on the
muscles, resulting in local spasm and aching. The effects may be
delayed. The substance may cause effects on the kidneys and
liver.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Boiling point: 97/C Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20/C (air = 1): 1.03
Melting point: -129/C Flash point: 21/C c.c.
Relative density (water = 1): 0.9 Auto-ignition temperature: 378/C
Solubility in water: miscible Explosive limits, vol% in air: 2.5-18.0
Vapour pressure, kPa at 20/C: 2.5 Octanol/water partition coefficient as log Pow: 0.17
Relative vapour density (air = 1): 2.0
ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms.
NOTES
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested.
The odour warning when the exposure limit value is exceeded is insufficient.
Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See section Occupational Exposure Limits.
