FIRE Not combustible. In case of fire in the surroundings:
powder, carbon dioxide, NO water.

EXPLOSION In case of fire: cool drums, etc., by
spraying with water but avoid contact
of the substance with water.

EXPOSURE AVOID ALL CONTACT! IN ALL CASES CONSULT A
DOCTOR!

Inhalation Burning sensation. Cough. Ventilation, local exhaust, or breathing Fresh air, rest. Half-upright position.
Laboured breathing. Shortness of protection. Artificial respiration may be needed.

Chemical Safety
0198 SULPHURYL CHLORIDE

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance Routes of exposure
COLOURLESS TO YELLOW LIQUID, WITH PUNGENT ODOUR. The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its
TURNS YELLOW ON EXPOSURE TO AIR/LIGHT. vapour.

Physical dangers Inhalation risk
The vapour is heavier than air. A harmful contamination of the air can be reached very quickly on
evaporation of this substance at 20/C.
Chemical dangers
Effects of short-term exposure
The substance decomposes under influence of moist air,
producing chlorine, sulphur oxide, sulphuric acid and hydrogen The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the
chloride. Reacts violently with water. Attacks many metals in respiratory tract. Inhalation of the vapour may cause lung oedema
presence of water. (see Notes). The substance may cause effects on the respiratory
tract. Exposure may result in death. The effects may be delayed.
Occupational exposure limits Medical observation is indicated.
TLV not established.
MAK not established.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Boiling point: 69.1/C Vapour pressure, kPa at 20/C: 14.8
Melting point: -54.1/C Relative vapour density (air = 1): 4.65
Relative density (water = 1): 1.67 Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20/C (air = 1): 1.5
Solubility in water: reaction

ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to water.

NOTES
The symptoms of lung oedema often do not become manifest until a few hours have passed and they are aggravated by physical effort.
Rest and medical observation is therefore essential.
Immediate administration of an appropriate inhalation therapy by a doctor or a person authorized by him/her, should be considered.
Do NOT take working clothes home.
Do NOT use in the vicinity of a fire or a hot surface, or during welding.
Card has been partly updated in October 2005. See section Emergency Response.
