Composition A bu ffered solution containing sodium sa lts of tris(hydroxym ethy l)
aminomethane (Tris) and sodium chloride, with pentachlorophenol (PCP)
as a preservative.
De scrip tion of Conte nts Pentachlo roph enol (CAS# 87-86-5) is the only hazard ous/c arcino genic
ingredient in this mixture, and it is present in a very low concentration
(0.00005%) as an antimicrobial preservative. According to the OSHA
Hazard Comm unications Standard (CFR 1910.1200), if a mixture contains
less tha n 1% of a hazardo us che mic al or 0.1% of a carcinog en, the mix ture
shall not be considered hazardous. Howev er, precautions for handling
potentially dang erous reag ents sh ould be practice d w hen using this
produc t.
To aid in determining handling procedures, we offer the following additional information regarding
pen tachloroph eno l:
Hazard identification Pentachlo roph enol is highly toxic . It is also a p ossible carcinogen. Chronic
exposure ma y ca use reproductiv e disorder(s) based on re sults with
laboratory a nima ls.
First aid measures IF IN DO UB T SE EK ME DICA L ADV ICE. In ca se of con tact:
Eyes and skin - irrigate with ple nty of w ater for at least 15 m inutes.
Ingestion - wash mouth with water (provided victim is conscious), drink
plenty of water. OBTAIN MEDICAL ATTENTION.
Inhalation - move to a we ll ve ntilated area an d cle ar no se and th roat.
Handling/ex posu re con trols Ha ndle in accordanc e w ith G ood Lab oratory Prac tice. Wear appropriate
protective clothing (safe ty spe ctacle s, chemic al resista nt glov es, lab oratory
coat).
Regulatory information CAS # 87-86-5 is listed on the TSCA inventory and is subject to SARA section
313 reporting requirements. It is also listed as a California Prop. 65
carcinogen.
