EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: Colorless
Warning! May cause severe eye and skin irritation with possible burns. May cause severe
respiratory tract irritation with possible burns.
Target Organs: None known.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Eye contact can result in corneal and conjunctival edema, iritis, erosion and opacity with pain, lacrymation,
photophobia and blurred vision.
Skin:
Severe irritation, pain, burns with blistering, brown/yellow stains, possible sensitization dermatitis.
Material Safety Data Sheet
Ammonium acetate buffer, APHA, ASTM
Ingestion:
Ingestion may produce burns of the mouth, esophagus with abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, asphyxia (esophageal
swelling), stomach and esophageal perforation.
Inhalation:
Will cause irritation to nose, throat, mucous membranes, and respiratory tract. Mucous membrane irritation. May
produce sore throat, headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, coughing, dyspnea, pneumonitis, rhinitis, bronchitis,
pharyngitis, possible pulmonary edema. May cause coughing, dyspnea, headache, weakness with delayed symptoms of
pulmonary edema.
Chronic:
Dental erosion, tooth discolorization, jaw necrosis, nasal ulceration, laryngitis, bronchitis, pneumonia and
gastrointestinal disturbances can occur. Yellow/brown stains can occur.
Section 4 - First Aid Measures
Eyes:
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids until no evidence
of chemical remains. Get medical aid at once. Cover burns with loose sterile non-medicated bandages.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing
contaminated clothing and shoes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Cover burns with a dry sterile bandage
(secure, not tight).
Ingestion:
Get medical aid at once. Give oxygen if respiration is depressed.
Inhalation:
Give artificial respiration if necessary. Get medical aid. Keep victim warm, at rest. Move victim to fresh air.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.
Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
General Information:
Negligible fire and explosion hazard when exposed to heat or flame. Vapors heavier than air, may travel considerable
distance and flash back from source of ignition. Move container if possible, avoid breathing vapors or dust. Acetic
acid may react explosively with oxidizing materials or give off flammable/explosive vapors above its flash point
(104F). Avoid breathing toxic and corrosive vapors - keep upwind.
Extinguishing Media:
For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or alcohol-resistant foam.
Autoignition Temperature:
No information found.
Flash Point:
No information found.

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
General Information:
Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spills with absorbent (vermiculite, sand, fuller's earth) and place in plastic bags for later disposal. May be
neutralized with slaked lime, limestone, or sodium bicarbonate to a pH 7. Absorb liquid with inert or neutralizing
substance such as fuller's earth, cement powder, fly ash, sand.
Section 7 - Handling and Storage
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid breathing dust, vapor, mist, or gas.
Storage:
Store capped at room temperature. Protect from heat and incompatibles.
Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
Engineering Controls:
Provide local exhaust or general dilution ventilation.
