EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: Clear orange
Warning! Causes severe respiratory tract burns. Causes severe eye burns. Causes digestive
tract burns. Causes skin burns.
Target Organs: None known.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Contact may cause ulceration of the conjunctiva and cornea. May cause blindness. Causes severe eye irritation and
possible burns.
Skin:
Causes severe skin irritation and possible burns.
Material Safety Data Sheet
Chromic acid, 10%

Ingestion:
May cause severe digestive tract irritation with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
Inhalation:
Causes severe respiratory tract irritation. Symptoms include headache, cough, fluid in the lungs, bronchitis, chest
pains, emphysema, liver and kidney damage.
Chronic:
Chronic inhalation may cause nasal septum ulceration and perforation. Repeated exposure may cause sensitization
dermatitis. Discoloration of teeth. Potential carcinogenic effects.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures
Eyes:
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids until no evidence
of chemical remains. Get medical aid at once. Cover burns with loose sterile non-medicated bandages.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing
contaminated clothing and shoes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes. Cover burns with a dry sterile bandage
(secure, not tight).
Ingestion:
Get medical aid at once. Give oxygen if respiration is depressed. Do not use gastric lavage or induce vomiting.
Inhalation:
Give artificial respiration if necessary. Get medical aid. Keep victim warm, at rest. Move victim to fresh air. Maintain
airway and blood pressure.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
General Information:
Negligible fire and explosion hazard when exposed to heat or flame. Move container if possible, avoid breathing
vapors or dust. Moderate fire and explosion hazard when in contact with metals (explosive hydrogen gas is formed) or
combustible organic or readily oxidizable materials. Avoid breathing toxic and corrosive vapors - keep upwind. When
toxic chromium trioxide is formed, oxygen is also released increasing fire hazard.
Extinguishing Media:
For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or alcohol-resistant foam.
Autoignition Temperature:
No information found.
Flash Point:
No information found.
NFPA Rating:
CAS# 7732-18-5: Not published.

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
General Information:
Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spills with absorbent (vermiculite, sand, fuller's earth) and place in plastic bags for later disposal. May be
neutralized with slaked lime, limestone, or sodium bicarbonate to a pH 7. Label container, indicate material contains
chromium. Keep out of sewers and drains where harmful chemical reactions could occur or chromium may persist in
the environment.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid breathing dust, vapor, mist, or gas.
Storage:
Store in labeled non-reactive containers (glass, plastic) protected from heat and incompatible substances. Protect from
heat and incompatibles. Store as a corrosive acid.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
Engineering Controls:
Provide local exhaust or general dilution ventilation.
