Section VI - Health Hazard Data

Routes of Entry: Inhalation? NO Skin? Yes Ingestion? Yes

Health Hazards (Acute and Chronic):
In the case of an acute massive dose in humans as may occur with ingestion of a concentrate, any of the
following signs may be expected: headache, confusion, personality change, tremors, convulsive
seizures, coma, marked respiratory distress or death.
In the case of human ingestion of sublethal doses (chronic toxicity) the individual should be observed
closely for signs of numbness, incoordination, headache, and mild confusion.

Carcinogenicity: NTP? NO IARC Monographs? NO OSHA Regulated? NO

Signs and Symptoms of Exposure:
In the case of an acute massive dose in humans as may occur with ingestion of a concentrate, any of the
following signs may be expected: headache, confusion, personality change, tremors, convulsive
seizures, coma, marked respiratory distress or death
In the case of human ingestion of sublethal doses (chronic toxicity) the individual should be observed
closely for signs of numbness, incoordination, headache, and mild confusion.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by None presently known.
Exposure:

Emergency and First Aid Procedures
INGESTED: If appreciable quantities are swallowed, call a physician or the Poison Control Center.
SKIN CONTACT: Wash affected areas promptly and thoroughly with soap and water. Rinse thoroughly.
If irritation occurs, get medical attention.
EYE CONTACT: Immediately rinse eyes with water for a minimum of 15 minutes and call a physician if
irritation persists.
INHALATION: Not Applicable

Toxicity of Technical Bromethalin:
Dog Oral LD50 4.7 mg/kg Dermal toxicity (rabbit) 3/6 deaths @ 200 mg/kg
Cat Oral LD50 l.8 mg/kg Dermal irritation (rabbit) None
Monkey Oral LD50 5.0 mg/kg Ocular irritation (rabbit) Slight
Rabbit Oral LD50 13.0 mg/kg Inhalation LC50 0.024 mg/L
Adult Quail Oral LD50 4.6 mg/kg l hour exposure (rats)
Oral (rats) LD50 2.0 mg/kg

Note to Physician:
The suggested treatment of bromethalin toxicity in the adult human can be divided into three
categories. Appropriate dosages for children must be carefully adjusted according to weight.
Measures to be taken are:

1.0 Limit further absorption by producing emesis. This could be done by agitating the back of the
throat, giving l or 2 tablespoons of syrup of Ipecac, etc. This should be followed by administering
activated charcoal, milk, beaten eggs, or suspension of flour or starch. NOTE: If no convulsions
are present, gastric lavage could be done.
2.0 Treatment of convulsions by standard anticonvulsant therapy, diazepam, diphenylhydantoin, and
barbiturate should be instituted. These treatments have been shown to prolong survival in rats,
which have received large doses of bromethalin.
3.0 Treatment of cerebral edema and increased cerebrospinal fluid pressure should be done in the
hospital. Treatment of this syndrome would largely depend on the severity since rodent studies
have shown that these effects are reversible in large part within seven days. Treatment would
involve the use of an osmotic diuretic, such as mannitol and corticosteroid therapy
(dexamethasone) and furosemide.
