3. Hazards Identification

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Odorless, colorless, poison gas. Oxidizer. Corrosive. This product contains nitric oxide which, when
inhaled, can cause death from pulmonary edema at relatively low concentrations. If respiratory, skin
or eye irritation occurs when working with this product, inhalation exposure may have already
occurred. Prompt medical attention is mandatory in all cases of overexposure.. .

EYE EFFECTS:
Overexposure may cause irritation or corrosive burns.

SKIN EFFECTS:
May cause skin irritation or corrosive burns.

INGESTION EFFECTS:
Unlikely; product is a gas.

INHALATION EFFECTS:
Nitric oxide vapors are a strong irritant to the pulmonary tract. Nitric oxide is highly toxic and hazardous
because of its ability to cause delayed chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema. The absence of marked
acute irritation of nitric oxide limits its warning properties.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS:
Initial symptoms of nitric oxide inhalation may be moderate and include irritation to the throat, tightness of the
chest, headache, nausea and gradual loss of strength. Severe symptoms may be delayed (possibly for several
hours) and include cyanosis, increased difficulty in breathing, irregular respiration, lassitude and possible
eventual death due to pulmonary edema in untreated cases.

CHRONIC EFFECTS:
Repeated exposure to nitric oxide may cause a permanent decrease in pulmonary function (Silo Filler鈥檚 Disease)
or chronic irritation of the respiratory tract with cough, headache, loss of appetite, dyspepsia, tooth corrosion
and gradual loss of strength.

TARGET ORGANS:
Overexposure may affect the respiratory tract.

4. First Aid Measures

EYE:
Immediately flush skin with large quantities of tepid water or sterile saline solution. Seek medical attention as
soon as possible.

SKIN:
Flush affected area with tepid water. Seek medical attention.

INGESTION:
Unlikely; product is a gas.

INHALATION:
PROMPT MEDICAL ATTENTION IS MANDATORY IN ALL CASES OF OVEREXPOSURE. RESCUE
PERSONNAL SHOULD BE EQUIPPED WITH SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS.
Conscious persons should be CARRIED (not assisted) to an uncontaminated area and inhale fresh air with
supplemental oxygen. Quick removal from the contamination area is most important. Keep the patient warm,
quiet and under competent medical observation until the danger of delayed pulmonary edema has passed (at least
72 hours). Any physical exertion during this period should be discouraged as it may increase the severity of the
pulmonary edema or chemical pneumonitis. Bed rest is indicated.

Unconscious persons should be moved to an uncontaminated area, and if breathing has stopped, administer
artificial resuscitation and supplemental oxygen. Once respiration has been restored, they should be treated as
above.

FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS:
This mixture is nonflammable.

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:
Nonflammable. Nitric oxide is a enhances combustion of organic matter and other combustible materials.

FIRE FIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS:
Firefighters should wear a NIOSH/MSHA approved self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) operated in
positive pressure mode and full turnout gear. Additional chemical protective clothing may be necessary to
prevent exposure.

6. Accidental Release Measures

Evacuate all personnel from affected area. Ventilate enclosed spaces. Deny entry to persons not wearing
appropriate protective equipment. If leak is in user鈥檚 equipment, be certain to purge piping with inert gas prior to
attempting repairs. If leak is in container or container valve, contact the appropriate emergency telephone
number listed in Section 1 or call your closest BOC location. Do not re-enter hazard area until oxygen content is
re-established and nitric oxide has dispersed.

7. Handling and Storage

Electrical classification:
Nonhazardous.

Use only in well-ventilated areas. Valve protection caps must remain in place unless container is secured with
valve protection outlet piped to use point. Do not drag, slide or roll cylinders. Use a suitable hand truck for
cylinder movement. Use a pressure-reducing regulator when connecting cylinder to lower pressure (< 3000
psig) piping or systems. Do not heat cylinder by any means to increase the discharge rate of product from the
cylinder. Use a check valve or trap in the discharge line to prevent hazardous back flow into the cylinder.

Protect cylinders from physical damage. Store in cool, dry, well-ventilated area of non-combustible construction
away from heavily trafficked areas and emergency exits. Do not allow the temperature where cylinders are
stored to exceed 130潞 F (54潞 C). Cylinders should be stored upright and firmly secured to prevent falling or
being knocked over. Use a 鈥渇irst-in first-out鈥? inventory system to prevent full cylinders being stored for
excessive periods of time.

Stationary customer site vessels should operate in accordance with the manufacturer's and BOC鈥檚 instruction. Do
not attempt to repair, adjust or in any other way modify the operation of these vessels. If there is a malfunction
or other type of operations problem with the vessel, contact the closest BOC location immediately.

For additional recommendations, consult Compressed Gas Association Pamphlets G-4, P-12, P-4.

Never carry a compressed gas cylinder or a container of a gas in cryogenic liquid form in an enclosed space such
as a car trunk, van or station wagon. A leak can result in a fire, explosion, asphyxiation or a toxic exposure.
