you feel unwell

Skin MAY BE ABSORBED! Redness. Pain. Protective gloves. Protective clothing. Remove contaminated clothes. Rinse
skin with plenty of water or shower. Refer
for medical attention.

Eyes Redness. Pain. Face shield. First rinse with plenty of water for several
minutes (remove contact lenses if easily
possible), then take to a doctor.

Ingestion Burning sensation. Sore throat. Do not eat, drink, or smoke during work. Rinse mouth. Give one or two glasses of

0424 CYANAMIDE 11S00000 CYANAMIDE

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance Routes of exposure
COLOURLESS, HYGROSCOPIC, DELIQUESCENT CRYSTALS. The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol,
through the skin and by ingestion.
Chemical dangers
Highly reactive compound. Can explode in vacuum distillation. The Inhalation risk
substance may polymerize spontaneously. Dimerizes at temperatures A harmful concentration of airborne particles can be reached quickly when
above 40 /C with strong heat release. Dimerization is catalyzed by traces dispersed, especially if powdered.
of bases. The substance decomposes on contact with acids, bases and
moisture producing toxic fumes, including ammonia, nitrogen oxides and Effects of short-term exposure
cyanides. Reacts with acids, strong oxidants, and strong reducing agents The substance is severely irritating to the eyes and the skin and is
causing explosion and toxic hazard. Attacks metal (e.g. steel, copper, irritating to the respiratory tract. See Notes.
aluminium).
Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Occupational exposure limits Repeated or prolonged contact may cause skin sensitization. Animal

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Boiling point at 0.067kPa: 83/C Solubility in water, g/100 ml at 25/C: 85
Melting point: 44/C Decomposes at 260 /C Vapour pressure, Pa at 20/C: 0.5
Relative density (water = 1): 1.28 Flash point: 141/C

ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
The substance is harmful to aquatic organisms. It is strongly advised that this substance does not enter the environment.

NOTES
Cyanamide has to be stabilized by pH-buffer against dimerization and decomposition.
An added stabilizer or inhibitor can influence the toxicological properties of this substance, consult an expert.
Cyanamide that has been stored for a long time or is contaminated, should be diluted with at least three times its volume of water to avoid critical
decomposition temperatures being reached.
Do NOT take working clothes home.
Term cyanamide is also used to designate calcium cyanamide.
In combination with even small amounts of alcohol the substance causes effects on cardiovascular and central nervous systems resulting in flushing,
palpitation, hypotension and hyperventilation.
