Chemical Safety
0540 PHENYLMERCURIC ACETATE
IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance Routes of exposure
ODOURLESS, HYGROSCOPIC WHITE OR WHITE-YELLOW The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its aerosol,
CRYSTALLINE POWDER through the skin, and by ingestion.
Physical dangers Inhalation risk
Dust explosion possible if in powder or granular form, mixed with air. Evaporation at 20/C is negligible; a harmful concentration of airborne
particles can, however, be reached quickly on spraying.
Chemical dangers
The substance decomposes on burning producing toxic vapours of Effects of short-term exposure
mercury and mercury oxides. Reacts with strong oxidants. The substance is corrosive to the eyes, the skin and the respiratory tract.
Corrosive on ingestion. The substance may cause effects on the kidneys,
Occupational exposure limits resulting in renal failure. The effects may be delayed. See Notes. Medical
TLV (as Hg): 0.1 mg/m3 as TWA (skin) (ACGIH 1999). observation is indicated.
MAK: (Hg organic compounds) skin absorption (H); sensitization of skin
(Sh); Carcinogen category: 3B (DFG 2006). Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause skin sensitization.
The substance may have effects on the nervous system and kidneys,
resulting in nervous disturbance and kidney impairment.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Melting point: 148-153/C Relative vapour density (air = 1): 11.6
Solubility in water, g/100 ml at 20/C: 0.44 Relative density of the vapour/air-mixture at 20/C (air = 1): 1
Vapour pressure, Pa at 25/C: 0.016 Flash point: 37.8/C c.c.
ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
The substance is very toxic to aquatic organisms. This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to water and
soil. In the food chain important to humans, bioaccumulation takes place, specifically in fish, crustacea and birds. Avoid release to the environment in
circumstances different to normal use.
NOTES
Explosive limits are unknown in literature, although the substance is combustible and has a flash point < 55/C.
The symptoms of renal failure do not become manifest until a few hours have passed.
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is indicated.
Do NOT take working clothes home.
Cerosol, Cosan, Gallotox, Liquiphene, Mersolite, Nylmerate, Riogen, Scutl, Tag Fungicide, Tag-HL-331 are trade names.
Card has been partially updated in August 2007: see Occupational Exposure Limits.
