Extinguishing Media: Suitable extinguishing agents. CO2, extinguishing powder or water spray.

Special Fire Fighting Procedures: Fight larger fires with water or alcohol resistant foam. Firefighters should wear
protective equipment and self-contained breathing apparatus.
Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: During heating or in case of fire, poisonous gases are produced. Methanol/water
mix will burn unless very dilute. Dust may form explosive mixture with air. Vapors may travel a considerable distance to
source of ignition and flash back.

Section VI 鈥? Health Hazard Data
Route(s) of Entry: Inhalation? Yes Skin? Yes Ingestion? Yes

Health Hazards Harmful. Methanol may be fatal or cause blindness if swallowed. Harmful if inhaled or absorbed
(Acute and Chronic) through skin. Irritating effect to skin, respiratory system and eyes. Cannot be made nonpoisonous.
Carcinogenicity: NTP? No IARC Monographs? Yes, Group 3 (Methanol) OSHA Regulated? No
(National Toxicology Program) Group 2B (Acetic Acid)
(International Agency for Research in Cancer)
Signs and Symptoms of Exposure: Vapors may be irritating to skin and mucous membranes. Irritating effect to eye.
Symptoms include redness and pain. Overexposure can cause vomiting, convulsion, hypertension and gastrointestinal
cramps. Inhalation of dust from Sodium Acetate may cause pulmonary tract problems.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: May cause eyes, liver, heart, and kidney disease with chronic
exposure to Methanol. Acetic Acid is strongly corrosive and causes serious burns.

Emergency / Ingestion: If swallowed, seek medical attention immediately.
First Aid
Inhalation: Supply fresh air or oxygen. Seek medical attention immediately. If not breathing, apply
Procedures
artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen.
Eye Contact: Rinse opened eye for several minutes under running water. Seek medical attention
immediately.
Skin Contact: Remove contaminated clothing immediately. Wash with plenty of soap and water for at
least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention.

Section VII 鈥? Precautions for Safe Handling and Use
Accidental Release Measures: Wear suitable protective clothing. Flush spill area with water. Wipe up with damp sponge
or mop. Shut off ignition sources. Avoid breathing dust.

Waste Disposal Method: Dispose in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local environmental regulations.
Handling and Storing: Keep container tightly closed. Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated, flammable liquid storage area.
Other Precautions: Prevent formation of dust. Ensure good ventilation / exhaustion at the workplace.

Section VIII 鈥? Control Measures
Respiratory Protection (Specify Type): None required where adequate ventilation conditions exist. If airborne
concentration exceeds TLV, a self-contained breathing apparatus is advised.
Ventilation Local Exhaust: 50 鈥? 100 CFM Special
Mechanical (General): N/A Other
Protective Gloves: Proper disposable gloves Eye Protection: Safety goggles
Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Uniform, lab coat or disposable lab wear.

Work / Hygienic Practices: Follow the usual precautionary measures for handling chemicals / powder. Keep away from
food and beverages. Immediately remove all soiled and contaminated clothing. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing.
