**** SECTION 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION ****

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Reacts violently with water liberating extremely flammable gases.
May form explosive peroxides. Causes burns.

Potential Health Effects
Eye:
Causes eye burns. May cause eye injury.
Skin:
Causes skin burns.
Ingestion:
Causes gastrointestinal irritation with nausea, vomiting and
diarrhea. Causes gastrointestinal tract burns.
Inhalation:
May cause irritation of the respiratory tract with burning pain in
the nose and throat, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath and
pulmonary edema. Causes chemical burns to the respiratory tract.
Inhalation may be fatal as a result of spasm, inflammation, edema of
the larynx and bronchi, chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary edema.

**** SECTION 4 - FIRST AID MEASURES ****

Eyes:
Immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes,
occasionally lifting the upper and lower eyelids. Get medical aid
immediately.
Skin:
Get medical aid immediately. Immediately flush skin with plenty of
water for at least 15 minutes while removing contaminated clothing
and shoes.
Ingestion:
Get medical aid immediately. Do NOT induce vomiting. If conscious
and alert, rinse mouth and drink 2-4 cupfuls of milk or water.
Inhalation:
Get medical aid immediately. Remove from exposure and move to fresh
air immediately. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If
breathing is difficult, give oxygen.

**** SECTION 5 - FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES ****

General Information:
As in any fire, wear a self-contained breathing apparatus in
pressure-demand, MSHA/NIOSH (approved or equivalent), and full
protective gear. Sodium amide reacts violently with water forming
NaOH and NH3.
Extinguishing Media:
Use dry sand or earth to smother fire. Do NOT use carbon dioxide. DO
NOT USE WATER OR FOAM.

**** SECTION 6 - ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES ****

General Information: Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated
in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Vacuum or sweep up material and place into a suitable disposal
container. Provide ventilation. Do not get water inside containers.

**** SECTION 7 - HANDLING and STORAGE ****

Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Remove contaminated clothing and
wash before reuse. Do not breathe dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Do not
get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. Use only in a chemical fume
hood.
Storage:
Store in a cool, dry place. Store in a tightly closed container.
Keep under a nitrogen blanket. Water free area. Containers should be
dated when opened and tested periodically for the presence of
peroxides. All peroxidizable substances should be stored away from
heat and light and be protected from ignition sources.

Engineering Controls:
Facilities storing or utilizing this material should be equipped
with an eyewash facility and a safety shower. Use adequate
ventilation to keep airborne concentrations low.

**** SECTION 10 - STABILITY AND REACTIVITY ****

Chemical Stability:
When exposed to the atmosphere, sodium amide rapidly absorbs H2O and
CO2. When only limited absorption takes place, as in poorly sealed
containers, products are formed which render the resulting mixture
highly explosive. The formation of oxidation products is accompanied
by the development of a yellow/brownish color. If discoloration is
noticed, the substance should be destroyed at once by covering with
much benzene, toluene, or kerosene and slowly adding diluted ethanol
with stirring.
Conditions to Avoid:
Ignition sources, dust generation, exposure to air, excess heat,
exposure to moist air or water.
Incompatibilities with Other Materials:
Potassium chlorates, chromic anhydride, Sodium amide reacts violently
with water forming NaOH and NH3. The reaction with alcohol is
considerably slower..
