SECTION 4: FIRE AND EXPLOSION DATA
This electrical discharge lamp contains a quartz arc tube and is designed for use only with proper
fixtures, ignitors, and ballasts. The arc tube operates under high internal pressure at very high
temperatures, as high as 950o C and may rupture unexpectedly. If a rupture occurs, the arc tube
and/or the outer bulb could break and will result in the discharge of extremely hot quartz
particles into the enclosure and/or surrounding environment. Thereby creating a risk of personal
injury, property damage, or fire.
SECTION 5: REACTIVITY DATA
Stability: Lamp is stable
Incompatibility: Quartz will react with Hydrofluoric acid. Do not touch with bare hands. If
touched with bare hands, clean lamp with denatured alcohol and wipe with a lint
free cloth before installing.
Polymerization: Not Applicable
SECTION 6: HEALTH HAZARD DATA
WARNING: This lamp emits short wave ultraviolet radiation which is harmful to skin and eyes
and can cause serious skin burns and eye inflammation. Use only if fully enclosed in a fixture
with an ultraviolet absorbing filter glass lens. Do not use this lamp if the ultraviolet filter glass is
missing or damaged.

SECTION 7: PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING AND USE
Read and follow the installation/operating instructions listed below to help reduce the risk
of personal injury and property damage and to help prevent early lamp failure.
1. Before lamp installation/replacement: shut off power and allow lamp and fixture to
cool to avoid electrical shock and possible burn hazards.
2. Install ONLY in fixtures which are FULLY ENCLOSED and able to contain fragments
of hot quartz (up to 1000o C). Lens/diffuser material MUST be heat resistant and capable
of absorbing ultraviolet radiation.
3. DO NOT operate a fixture with a missing or broken lens diffuser.
4. Protect lamp from abrasions and scratches. Do not install or use cracked or broken lamp.
If lamp cracks or breaks in use, disconnect power supply immediately, allow system to
cool and remove lamp.
WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD: This lamp has not been tested under the TCLP protocol. The
arc tube contains a small amount of mercury. Under the new Toxicity law Characteristics
Leaching Procedure (TCLP) promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA),
tests of used or spent fluorescent, incandescent, and high discharge lamps indicate that some
types of these lamps may be classified as characteristic hazardous waste. Notably, the TCLP test
results for fluorescent lamps vary tremendously from laboratory to laboratory. Lamps from all
manufacturers exhibit the same phenomena. The National Electrical Manufacturers Association
(NEMA) is working closely with the EPA for clarification and guidance.
Small numbers of these lamps placed in ordinary trash may not appreciably affect the method of
lamp disposal. If spent lamps are added to other regulated wastes or disposed in large quantities,
disposal of lamps may be regulated. Customers should review their waste handling practices to
assure that they are properly disposing of waste lamps.

SECTION 8: CONTROL MEASURES
Respiratory Protection: None. NIOSH-approved respirator might be used if large volumes of
lamps are being broken for disposal.
Ventilation: Avoid inhalation of any airborne dust. Provide local exhaust when disposing of
large quantities of lamps.
Hand and Eye Protection: Appropriate hand and eye protection should be worn when disposing
of lamps or handling broken glass.
