SECTION 4: FIRE AND EXPLOSION DATA
Not Applicable. This item is a light bulb. Under extreme heat bulb might crack.

SECTION 5: REACTIVITY DATA
Stability: Lamp is stable.
Polymerization: Will not occur.
Incompatibility: Glass will react with hydrofluoric acid, base will be attacked by acids. If a
lamp bulb support is used be sure to insulate the support electronically so as to avoid possible
decomposition of the bulb glass. Do not scratch the bulb or subject it to pressure. A broken
outer bulb increases the risk of exposure to ultraviolet. Protect the lamp base, socket and wiring
against moisture, corrosive atmospheres and excessive heat.

SECTION 6: HEALTH HAZARD DATA
DANGER: This lamp emits ultraviolet radiation. Avoid exposure. Ultraviolet radiation is
harmful to skin and eyes. It can cause skin burns and eye inflammation from direct or reflected
radiation. To reduce the risk of personal injury, install only fixtures which provide adequate
protection to area occupants. Consult fixture manufacturers regarding the suitability of the
fixture for this lamp. Turn off lamps before installing, replacing, cleaning or performing any
maintenance work near fixtures.
Breakage of the outer bulb might result in exposure to silica, which is the coating on the outside
of the inner arc tube. No adverse affects are expected from occasional exposure. Prolonged or
chronic exposure to silica dust can cause adverse lung disorders.

Breakage of the inner bulb can result in exposure to thallium and iodide. Both are listed poisons
but are not listed as carcinogens by NTP or IARC. Inhalation, ingestion, skin and eye contact are
to be avoided. Acute exposure symptoms are not expected but include convulsions, nausea,
vomiting, diarrhea, pain of legs, weight loss, paralysis. Chronic symptoms are paralysis, pain of
legs and loss of hair. Occasional exposure to a broken lamp should not cause adverse effects.

Exposure to mercury from the occasional broken lamp is also not expected to result in any
adverse effects.

While lead is present in the glass and solder, breakage should not result in any lead exposure.
Lead is a reproductive toxicant and can affect the nervous system.

As a matter of good practice, breakage should be avoided.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: If exposure to contents of inner arc tube:
Skin: Wash thoroughly with soap and water.
Eyes: Flush with water for at least 15 minutes. Call physician.
Ingestion: Call physician or poison control center.
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air.

If only outer bulb is broken, use normal first aid procedure for glass cuts if they occur due to
breakage.

SECTION 7: PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING AND USE
Shut off power to fixture before installing, replacing, cleaning or performing maintenance to
lamp installation.

CAUTION: Use this electric discharge lamp only with proper circuits and auxiliary
equipment. Operating the lamp improperly may result in damage to equipment or personal
injury, for which the lamp manufacturer does not assume any responsibility.

Normal precautions should be taken for collection of broken glass.

WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD: Under the Toxicity Characteristics Leachate Procedure (TCLP)
promulgated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), tests of used or spent high
intensity discharge lamps indicate that some types of these lamps may be classified as
characteristic hazardous waste. These lamps will fail the TCLP for lead and may fail for
mercury. The lead used in the solder poses little risk of exposure under normal use and handling.
Under the Universal Waste Rule, these lamps must be recycled or handled as a hazardous waste.
There are some exemptions depending on your status and your location. Regulations can vary
from State to State. Check with your local and State Authorities for advice.

If spent lamps are added to other regulated wastes or disposed of in large quantities, disposal of
lamps may be regulated. Customer should review their waste handling practices to assure that
they are properly disposing of waste lamps.

SECTION 8: CONTROL MEASURES
Respiratory Protection: None. NIOSH-approved respirator might be used if large volumes of
lamps are being broken for disposal.
Ventilation: Avoid inhalation of any airborne dust.
Hand and Eye Protection: Should be worn when handling broken glass.
