Section 2 : Health Hazard Data
Acute Health Effects: In general, this product is of low toxicity. Exposure may cause irritation to the
eyes, and respiratory passages. This product may cause allergic reactions in cluding urticaria, rash,
dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, chills, fever, nervousness and insomnia in certain sensitive
individuals. Hypersensitivity reactions may occur.
Chronic Health Effects: Unknown
Section 3 : First Aid Measures
Eye Contact: Check for and remove contact lenses. Flush eyes with running water for at least 15
minutes separating eyelids. Seek medical attention immediately
Skin Contact: Wash with soap and water for 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.
Seek medical attention immediately.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure. If breathing is difficult, administer oxygen. If breathing stops,
administer artificial respiration. Seek medical attention immediately. Provide chemical label
and MSDS if possible.
Ingestion: Remove dentures and clear mouth. Call physician or poison control immediately.
Provide chemical label and MSDS information if possible.
Note: If serious allergic reaction occurs, the usual agents (epinephrine, corticosteroids, and / or
antihistamines) should be used as indicated.
Section 4 : Fire and Explosion Data
Flash Point: Not Applicable
Combustion Products: Carbon dioxide, Carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides
Extinguishing Media: Carbon Dioxide, Dry chemical powder, water spray
Special Firefighting Procedures: Use self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to
prevent contact with skin and eyes.
Unusual Fire/Explosion Hazards: As with all finely divided organic powders, it is advisable to eliminate
explosion hazards by method such as grounding mechanical equipment in contact with the material
to prevent the buildup of static electricity, inerting the atmosphere, or controlling dust levels.
Section 5 : Spill or Leak Procedures
Cleanup Procedures: EVACUATE AREA. Remove possible ignition sources. Wearing appropriate
protective gear as outlined under 鈥淧rotective equipment鈥? wipe up spill and place in sealed
container and hold for disposal. Avoid raising dust. Ventilate the area and wash spill site after
material has been removed.
Waste Disposal Method: Observe all Federal, State and Local regulations concerning the disposal of
this product.
Section 6 : Storage and Handling Precautions
Protective Equipment: For spill clean up, wear suitable protective clothing, chemical resistant rubber
gloves, rubber boots, and chemical safety goggles. Self contained breathing apparatus or
NIOSH/MSHA approved respirator is recommended when working with the material in solid state.
Storage and Handling: This product should be stored at room temperature. It should be kept in a tightly
closed container. This product should be handled only by qualified experienced professionals.
Wash thoroughly after handling this material
Section 7 : Physical Data
Appearance: White or off white crystalline solid Odor: None
Molecular Weight: 342.2 Taste: Not Available
Boiling Point: Not Available Melting Point: 184-194掳C
Solubility: DMSO, Ethanol, Water Vapor Density: Not Available
Specific Gravity: Not Available Vapor Pressure: Not Available
Volatility: Not Available
Section 8 : Stability and Reactivity Data
Stability: This material is stable if stored as directed
Conditions to Avoid: Solutions with a pH greater then 4. Degrades to spectanoic acid (no biological
activity) at pH greater then 5.
Incompatibles: Bases
Section 9 : Toxicity Data
RTECS#: Not Available
Oral LD50 Rat : 5000mg/kg
I.P. LD50 Rat : 2020mg/kg Mouse : 2350mg/kg
S.C. LD50 Mouse : 8400mg/kg
Section 10 : Ecological Data
Mobility: Spectinomycin is a polar base. It readily forms salts with acids. These salts have a low vapor
pressure and should not enter the air. Based on it鈥檚 physical properties, this product would be
expected to be relatively mobile in the aquatic compartment with little or no sorbtion onto organic
particles taking place.
Persistance / Degradability: Spectinomycin is stable in water at pH鈥檚 below 4. At higher pH鈥檚 is
degrades to spectanoic acid which has no biological activity. This degradation is readily measured
at 70掳c and 40掳C but is much slower at room temperature. Thus in naturally occuring waters
above pH 5 this product would be expected to slowly degrade to non-biologically active material.
Abiotic Potential: This product may have some initial inhibitory effects on the most sensitive
microorganisms until it is degraded. Small amounts sent to the sanitary sewage will not adversely
affect the biotic flora of sewage treatment facilities.
The above information is believed to be correct but does not purport to be complete and should be used only as a guide. The burden of
safe use of this material rests entirely with the user.
