    Many of these respiratory conditions may be aller-

    genic in nature, and respiratory irritation can also

    arise from a non-infectious source, such as dust or

    pollen. Regardless of the specific cause, the downtime

    with the help and relief that an antihistamine can

    provide.



    Why use an antihistamine combined

    with a decongestant?

    Antihistamines are used in veterinary medicine to

    block the effects of histamine, a chemical that a

    horse’s mast cells release during an allergic reaction

    histamine can bind to receptors on blood vessel, nasal

    tissue and nerve cells, and lead to mucus production,

    nasal congestion, sneezing, itching, swelling and

    irritated skin.2

    Antihistamines block histamine from binding to recep-

    tors. Once a horse has been exposed to a pathogen

    or allergen, and histamine is already bound to the

    receptor, antihistamines cannot reverse the process

    and remove the bound histamine. To counter the

    symptoms caused by the already bound histamine,

    antihistamines are often combined with a decon-

    gestant. A decongestant in the medication helps

    to relieve the adverse histamine-mediated effects

    already present, and the antihistamine blocks further
