Health Effects

Acute - Swallowed May be harmful if swallowed. Causes irritation and burns to the mouth and
stomach.
Acute - Eye Causes burns. Material is extremely destructive to the eyes.
Acute - Skin Causes burns. Material is extremely destructive to the skin.
Acute - Inhaled Irritating to the upper respiratory system. Inhalation may result in spasm,
inflammation and edema of the larynx and bronchi, chemical pneumonitis, and
pulmonary edema. Symptoms of exposure may include burning sensation,
coughing,
wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Material
is extremely destructive to tissue of the mucous membranes and upper respiratory
tract. Iodides have been known to cause drug-induced fevers, which are usually of
short duration.

Chronic Prolonged exposure to iodides may produce iodism in sensitive individuals.
Symptoms of exposure include: skin rash, running nose, headache and irritation of
the mucous membrane. For severe cases the skin may show pimples, boils, hives,
blisters and black and blue spots.
First Aid

Swallowed Rinse mouth thoroughly with water immediately. Give plenty of water to drink.
Seek medical attention.
Eye Immediately irrigate with copious quantity of water for at least 15 minutes. Eyelids
to be held open. Seek medical advice if effects persist.
Skin Wash affected areas with copious quantities of water immediately. Remove
contaminated clothing and wash before re-use. Seek medical attention.
Inhaled Remove victim from exposure - avoid becoming a casualty. Allow patient to
assume most comfortable position and keep warm. Keep at rest until fully
recovered. Seek medical attention.
First Aid Maintain eyewash fountain and drench facilities in work area.

Other Health Hazard Information

Teratogenicity Exposure to excessive amounts of iodine during pregnancy is capable of producing
fetal hypothyroidism. Iodides are readily diffused across the placenta.
Iodine-containing drugs have been associated with fetal goiter. Neonatal deaths
from respiratory distress secondary to goiter have been reported.
PRECAUTIONS FOR USE

Other Exposure A time weighted average (TWA) concentration for an 8 hour day, and 5 day week
Info. has not been established by NOHSC Australia for this product. There is a blanket
limit of 10 mg/m鲁 for dusts or mists when limits have not otherwise been
established.
Eng. Controls In industrial situations maintain the concentrations values below the TWA. This
may be achieved by process modification, use of local exhaust ventilation,
capturing substances at the source, or other methods.

Respirator Type Where ventilation is not adequate, respiratory protection may be required. Avoid
(AS 1716) breathing dust, vapours or mists. Respiratory protection should comply with AS
1716 - Respiratory Protective Devices and be selected in accordance with AS 1715
- Selection, Use and Maintenance of Respiratory Protective Devices. Filter
capacity and respirator type depends on exposure levels. In event of emergency or
planned entry into unknown concentrations a positive pressure, full-facepiece
SCBA should be used. If respiratory protection is required, institute a complete
respiratory protection program including selection, fit testing, training,
maintenance and inspection.
Eye Protection The use of a face shield, chemical goggles or safety glasses with side shield
protection as appropriate. Must comply with Australian Standards AS 1337 and be
selected and used in accordance with AS 1336.
Glove Type Hand protection should comply with AS 2161, Occupational protective gloves -
Selection, use and maintenance.
Clothing Clean clothing or protective clothing should be worn, preferably with an apron.
Clothing for protection against chemicals should comply with AS 3765 Clothing
for Protection Against Hazardous Chemicals.

Spills & Disposal Do NOT touch or walk through this product. Do NOT touch damaged containers
or spilled material unless wearing appropriate protective clothing. Stop leak if safe
to do so. Prevent entry into waterways, drains, confined areas. Do not use steel or
aluminium tools or equipment. Cover with earth, sand or other non-combustible
material followed by plastic sheet to minimize spreading or contact with rain. Seek
expert advice before handling mercury - Use a mercury spill kit if available. Clean
up bulk of spill using mechanical means - Residual mercury may be reacted with
calcium sulfide (mercury spill kit).
