MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET 01015 Pg. 1
Issued: 11/19/07
1. Chemical Product and Contact Information

10 mg (STEL)

3. Hazard Identification
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
No significant health hazard. Similar to stainless steel.

Potential Health Effects
EYES: Can be irritating.
SKIN: Can be irritating.
INHALATION: None reported.
INGESTION: None reported.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED: None known.
CHRONIC OVEREXPOSURE: None reported.
ACUTE OVEREXPOSURE: None reported.
CARCINOGENICITY: No.

P/N: 502-047
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET 01015 Pg. 2

4. First Aid Measures
EYES: Rinse eyes thoroughly with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes.
SKIN: Wash with soap and water for at least 15 minutes.
INHALATION: Remove to fresh air.
INGESTION: Not available.

5. Fire Fighting Measures
FLAMMABLE PROPERTIES: Non-flammable.
Flash Point: Not available. Method Used: Not applicable.
Flammable Limits (% by Volume in Air):
Lower: None. Upper: None.
AUTO-IGNITION TEMPERATURE: Not applicable.
HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS: Not available.
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Dry table salt or type D dry-powder fire extinguisher material. Do
NOT spray water on burning zirconium. Carbon dioxide is not effective in extinguishing
burning zirconium
FIREFIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS: Solid metal will not ignite. High surface area material such as
10 micron powder may auto-ignite at room temperature. If metal fines become ignited, it is
advisable to allow the material to burn out. Fires can be controlled by smothering with proper
extinguishing media. If a fire starts in a mass of wet metal fines, the initial fire may be followed
by an explosion. Therefore, when in doubt, personnel should retire and not attempt to extinguish
the fire. The explosive characteristic of such material is caused by the steam and hydrogen
generated within the burning mass.

6. Accidental Release Measures
SMALL/LARGE SPILL: No special procedure.

7. Handling and Storage
HANDLING: Machining of zirconium may result in fine turnings, chips or dust. Any material with
a dimension less than 0.002 in. (0.005 cm) is flammable, keep away from any source of ignition.
Keep fine turnings completely dry, or very wet. If wet, the water content should be more than
25% by weight for maximum safety in handling. Severe explosions can result from ignition of
zirconium powder or machining fines containing moisture in the concentration range of 5 to
10%. Do not accumulate large quantities of fines or machining residues. Dispose of these
materials daily. In some cases, when the chemical corrosion resistance of zirconium is exceeded,
a corrosion product containing fine zirconium particulate can form on the surface of the metal
which can be easily ignited. This film can be rendered non-flammable by simple oxidation
treatments such as heating to 482掳 F.(250掳 C.) for 1 hour or 212掳 F.(100掳 C.) for 7 days.
STORAGE: Keep container closed.

P/N: 502-047
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET 01015 Pg. 3

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
ENGINEERING CONTROLS: None required.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Not available.
SKIN AND HAND PROTECTION: Use of gloves advisable to avoid cuts.
EYE AND FACE PROTECTION: Safety glasses with side shields.
OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: None required.

9. Physical and Chemical Properties
APPEARANCE: Similar to stainless steel.
BOILING POINT: 7911掳 F.(4377掳 C.)
FREEZE-MELT POINT: 3368掳 F.(1853掳 C.)
VAPOR PRESSURE (mm): 0.
VAPOR DENSITY (air = 1): Not available.
SOLUBILITY IN WATER: Insoluble.
SPECIFIC GRAVITY: 6.49
pH: Not available.
ODOR: None.
PERCENT VOLATILES: Non-volatile.
EVAPORATION RATE (Butyl Acetate = 1): 0.

10. Stability and Reactivity
CHEMICAL STABILITY: Stable.
INCOMPATIBILITY: Zirconium is rapidly dissolved by hydrofluoric acid or hydrofluoric-nitric
acid mixtures. Above 392掳 F.(200掳 C.), zirconium reacts exothermically with fluorine, chlorine,
bromine, iodine, and halocarbons, including carbon tetrachloride, carbon tetrafluoride and
Freons. Nitryl fluoride, FNO2, will initiate a reaction with zirconium metal at room temperature
to produce a glowing or white incandescence.
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: Zirconium metal does not decompose. The
above reactions with incompatible materials will generate hazardous reaction products such as
flammable hydrogen, toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides, or corrosive zirconium halide vapors.
HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: None.

11. Toxicological Information
Zirconium metal is non toxic.

12. Ecological Information
Not available.

13. Disposal Consideration

P/N: 502-047
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET 01015 Pg. 4

Fine, non-recyclable scrap should be burned in small quantities under controlled conditions. The
resulting zirconium oxide is inert and may be deposited in a landfill.

14. Transportation Information
U.S.A. DOT: Not regulated.

15. Regulatory Information

U.S. FEDERAL REGULATIONS:
TSCA STATUS: On Toxic Substance Control Inventory.
CERCLA REPORTABLE QUANTITY: None.
SARA TITLE III:
Section 302 Extremely Hazardous Substances: None.

CANADIAN REGULATIONS:
WHMIS: Not regulated.

16. Other Information
Hazard Index: (0 - 4, 4 = Extreme)
Health: 0 Fire: 0 Reactivity: 0
