Section 3 - Hazards Identification

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Appearance: Dark green
Warning! May be harmful if absorbed through the skin. Harmful or fatal if swallowed. May
cause irritation by all exposure routes. May cause blindness if swallowed.
Target Organs: None known.
Potential Health Effects
Eye:
May cause severe eye irritation. May cause blindness.
Material Safety Data Sheet
Carbol-fuchsin solution

Skin:
Rapidly absorbed, produces painless erythema, sweating, thirst, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stupor, excitation,
cyanosis, hypotension, collapse, coma, convulsions, hemolysis, pulmonary edema; death can occur
from respiratory failure. Liver and kidney damage results in jaundice, oliguria, anuria.
Ingestion:
Harmful if swallowed. Can burn mouth and throat; causes profuse sweating, intense thirst, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea,
cyanosis, hypotension, pain, convulsions, coma. 1 gram may be a fatal adult dose. Ingestion can be fatal, symptoms of
hypoglycemia, convulsions, shock, tachycardia, hypotension, vertigo, diplopia, pupil dilation.
Inhalation:
Causes irritation of the mucous membranes. Vapors may irritate the nose, throat, produce coughing with toxic
amounts producing vomiting, coma, convulsions. Phenol - although volatility is low (thus low industrial hazard), IDLH
level is only 100ppm. May cause nasal irritation, cough; high levels cause feeling of suffocation, central nervous
system depression (drunkenness). May cause narcosis, CNS depression leading to respiratory/circulatory failure, pain,
blindness, coma, kidney/liver damage, cyanosis, edema, death.
Chronic:
Methanol -- blurred or painful vision, conjunctivitis; possible mutagenic or reproductive effects.
Phenol-- prolonged inhalation may cause general weakness, liver and kidney damage. Basic fuchsin-known animal
carcinogen. Anticipated human carcinogen. Dermatitis, conjunctivitis (with permanent or temporary visual
impairment), optic neuritis, pain and atrophy. Weight loss, cirrhosis, gastroenteritis, amnesia, tremors, acute myopathy,
muscular edema and degeneration occur from long term exposure.

Section 4 - First Aid Measures
Eyes:
Flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting the upper and lower lids until no evidence
of chemical remains. Get medical aid at once.
Skin:
Get medical aid. Immediately flush skin with plenty of soap and water for at least 15 minutes while removing
contaminated clothing and shoes. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.
Ingestion:
Get medical aid at once. Remove by gastric lavage and emesis using tap water, warm water, or 3-5% sodium
bicarbonate solution unless 2 or more hours have passed. Syrup of ipecac may be given promptly following ingestion.
Inhalation:
Give artificial respiration if necessary. Get medical aid. Keep victim warm, at rest. Move victim to fresh air.
Notes to Physician:
Treat symptomatically and supportively.

Section 5 - Fire Fighting Measures
General Information:
Avoid breathing vapors, use approved respirator if necessary. Move container if possible, cool with flooding amounts
of water. Vapors heavier than air, may travel considerable distance and flash back from source of ignition. Move
container if possible, avoid breathing vapors or dust. Slight fire hazard when exposed to heat or flame.
Extinguishing Media:
For small fires, use dry chemical, carbon dioxide, water spray or alcohol-resistant foam.
Autoignition Temperature:
No information found.

Section 6 - Accidental Release Measures
General Information:
Use proper personal protective equipment as indicated in Section 8.
Spills/Leaks:
Absorb spill using an absorbent, non-combustible material such as earth, sand, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite, or
other suitable absorbent. Scoop material into suitable (plastic or glass) container, label for disposal. Shut off ignition
source, avoid vapors. Isolate, ventilate spill area. Water may be used to reduce vapor hazard - keep out of sewers and
drains, vapors explosive, may ignite.

Section 7 - Handling and Storage
Handling:
Wash thoroughly after handling. Avoid breathing dust, vapor, mist, or gas.
Storage:
Keep away from incompatible materials. Store capped as a flammable liquid in safety cabinet or vault that is
ventilated.

Section 8 - Exposure Controls, Personal Protection
Engineering Controls:
Provide local exhaust or general dilution ventilation.
