VI. HEALTH HAZARD DATA:
Effects of acute overexposure for Methyl Salicylate:
Eyes: May cause temporary eye irritation . Corneal injury is unlikely.
Skin: Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause skin irritation.
Ingestion Single dose oral toxicity is moderate . The oral LD50 for rats is approximately 1500 mg/kg .
Signs and symptoms ofexcessive exposure may be nausea and/or vomiting . Even though the acute oral
toxicity for rats is low, people have ingested lethal doses. Ingestion may also cause GI irritation, ringing
in the ears, acid-base imbalance and possible kidney damage .
Inhalation: A single prolonged (hours) excessive inhalation exposure may cause adverse effects.
Excessive exposure nay cause lung injury .
Systemic and other : Repeated excessive exposure may cause nausea, vomiting, metabolic disturbances
and possibly kidney damage . Did not cause cancer in long-term animal studies . Has caused birth
defects in laboratory annals only at doses toxic to the mother. High dietary levels of methyl salicylate
have reduced the viability of young in a 3-generation reproduction study.
Emergency First Aid Procedures:
Inhalation: Remove to fresh air. Consult a physician.
Skin: Remove any contaminated clothing and launder before reuse. Wash skin thoroughly . Seek
medical attention if irritation or burns develop.
Eyes: Flush eyes immediately with large amounts of running water for at least 15 minutes.
Ingestion: NEVER give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. If swallowed, DO NOT
INDUCE VOMITING . If vomiting occurs spontaneously, keep airway clear. SEEK MEDICAL
ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY
VII. PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING AND USE:
Spills: Spills should be contained, collected into absorbent material and disposed of in accordance with
all applicable federal, state and local regulations .
Handling and Storage: Store at moderate room temperature (50-110 0 F). Cooler temperatures prolong
shelf-life. Wash thoroughly after handling. Read label carefully and follow directions .
