Section VI - Health Hazard Data

ROUTES OF Inhalation? Yes Skin? Yes Ingestion? Yes
ENTRY
HEALTH HAZARDS (Acute and Chronic): ACUTE: Iodine may cause severe irritation to the respiratory tract causing sore throat, headache, vertigo, runny nose, fever,
aches, fluid in the lungs, chest tightness, frothy sputum, dyspnea. Dermal irritation, skin rash (sensitization) may occur with burns, blistering, and lesions. Iodine
solutions irritate and stain the eye, corrosion of epithelial layer can occur. Ingestion can result in severe vomiting, diarrhea, pain, thirst, metallic taste, shock, fever,
anuria, delirium, stupor, hemorrhagic nephritis, death. Fatal dose estimated at 2gm iodine. CHRONIC: 鈥淚ODISM鈥? may occur with symptoms of runny nose, bronchitis,
weight loss, insomnia, tremors, tachycardia, parotitis, diarrhea, laryngeal edema, skin rash (dermatitis), serum sickness (lymph node enlargement, joint swelling/pain
conjunctivitis, stomatitis, sneezing, headache, fever, erythema, acne, urtcaria). Use of iodides in pregnant asthmatics resulted in fetal death, cretinism, and severe
goiter.

COMPONENTS LISTED AS CARCINOGENS OR POTENTIAL CARCINOGENS: N/A

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF EXPOSURE: Irritation or stain of eyes, skin. Irritation of respiratory and digestive tracts.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS GENERALLY AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: Skin and respiratory disorders. Disease of thyroid, kidneys.

EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: Inhalation: Move victim to fresh air, give artificial respiration if necessary. Maintain airway, blood pressure. Medical
personnel may give oxygen. Keep victim warm, at rest. Get medical aid at once. Skin: Remove contaminated clothing and immediately wash affected area with soap
and water. Flush with large amounts of water (15-20 minutes), until chemical is gone. Skin eruptions may be treated with mild astringent and wet dressing. Get medical
aid. Eyes: Flush immediately with large amounts of water (15-20 minutes) lifting upper/lower lids occasionally until chemical is gone. Get medical attention.
Ingestion: Give conscious victim milk. Absorb iodine with starch solution (15 grams cornstarch or flour to 500ml water). Maintain airway and respiration. Emesis and
lavage should not be performed where there is esophageal injury. Milk every 15 minutes may relieve gastric irritation. Get medical aid at once.

Section VII - Precautions for Safe Handling and Use

STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED: May be neutralized with soda ash, or absorbed with inert material.

WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD: Dispose of in a manner consistent with federal, state and local regulations.

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING AND STORAGE: Store at room temperature, capped.

OTHER PRECAUTIONS* Wear impervious clothing.

Section VIII - Control Measures

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION (Please specify): Follow OSHA respirator regulations found in 29CFR 1010.134 when necessary.

VENTILATION: Provide local exhaust or genial dilution ventilation.

PROTECTIVE GLOVES: Wear appropriate glove. EYE PROTECTION: Wear appropriate protective glasses or safety goggles.

OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:

EMERGENCY WASH FACILITIES: Provide eye-wash fountain and drench shower in work area.
