Issued: 11/19/07
1. Chemical Product and Contact Information
Activated Alumina A
Product Name: Part Number:
502-233
LECO Corporation
3000 Lakeview
St. Joseph, Michigan 49085
Information: 269-983-5531
Chemtrec: 800-424-9300
(Chemtrec Int'l: 703-527-3887)

2. Composition/Information on Ingredients

Component CAS No. PEL (mg/m 3) TLV (mg/m3) by Weight
Aluminum Oxide 1344-28-1 Not given Not given > 95

3. Hazard Identification
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
No unusual spill or fire hazard; minor irritant health risk. Odorless white powder or granular solid.

Potential Health Effects
EYES: May cause temporary discomfort from dust.
SKIN: None.
INHALATION: Low toxicity by inhalation. Dust particles are abrasive and may cause irritation,
chest pain and shortness of breath.
INGESTION: Low toxicity orally. May cause constipation. Alumina is used extensively in the
drug industry as an antacid constituent.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED: Persons with chronic respiratory or dermatological
disorders may be at increased risk.
CHRONIC OVEREXPOSURE: Prolonged inhalation may affect lung function.
ACUTE OVEREXPOSURE: Not available.
CARCINOGENICITY: None.

P/N: 502-233
MATERIAL SAFETY DATA SHEET 01650 Pg. 2

4. First Aid Measures
EYES: Flush with plenty of water.
SKIN: Wash with soap and water.
INHALATION: Seek medical advice.
INGESTION: Seek medical advice.

5. Fire Fighting Measures
FLAMMABLE PROPERTIES: Non-flammable.
Flash Point: None. Method Used: Not applicable.
Flammable Limits (% by Volume in Air):
Lower: None. Upper: None.
AUTO-IGNITION TEMPERATURE: Not applicable.
HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS: None.
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: None.
FIREFIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS: Material may have flammable or explosive chemicals
adsorbed.

6. Accidental Release Measures
SMALL/LARGE SPILL: Avoid breathing dust and other personal contact, wear gloves, preferably
vacuum up the material, or cover with inert absorbent materials (e.g. sand, earth, vermiculite,
etc.), carefully sweep up and place into a labeled receptacle for safe deposit..

7. Handling and Storage
HANDLING: Sorbent - may adsorb hazardous chemicals which will desorb on heating. This
material is regenerated in traps by application of heat. Handling of fiber elements that have been
on processes that use or produce toxic, flammable, or explosive or pyrophoric substances, must
include precautions suitable to the risk involved. Do not wear contact lenses. Dry powders can
build static electricity charges when subjected to the friction of conveying, mixing or sliding. To
prevent ignition, provide adequate precautions, such as electrical grounding, or inert
atmospheres when material is used in the presence of flammable materials. Avoid creating dusty
conditions. Avoid prolonged skin contact. Do not breathe dust.
STORAGE: Keep container closed. Store in a cool, dry well-ventilated area away from sources of
heat, food and drink and animal foodstuffs.

8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Local exhaust should be provided if there is a risk of exposure to
the dust.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Use BS 2091/B if there is a risk of exposure to the dust.
SKIN AND HAND PROTECTION: Protective gloves recommended.
EYE AND FACE PROTECTION: Goggles (BS 2092/D) if risk of exposure to the dust.
OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Maintain a sink, safety shower and eyewash fountain in the
work area. Have oxygen readily available.

HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: None.

11. Toxicological Information
None reported.

12. Ecological Information
Not available.

13. Disposal Consideration
Material should be disposed of in a way that is appropriate to the chemical hazard involved. Any
heat regeneration should only be undertaken if the risk is known and can be guarded against.
A) Local authority may accept the sweepings, or
B) Arrange disposal by a licensed contractor, or
C) Dispose of safely, and in accordance with the Control of Pollution Act 1974, and
regulations made thereunder.
