3. Hazard Identification
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Stainless steel in solid state presents no inhalation, ingestion or contact health hazard. Operations such
as welding and machining, which result in either melting the product or generation of airborne
particulates may present hazards. The major exposure hazard is inhalation. No significant spill hazard;
moderate fire hazard.
Potential Health Effects
EYES: Can be irritating. SKIN: Can be irritating.
INHALATION: Can irritate throat. Acute iron exposure can result in pulmonary effects and siderosis. High
concentrations of fumes/dust from iron oxide, cobalt, manganese and copper may result in metal fume fever.
INGESTION: Not available.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED: Chronic respiratory disorders may be adversely affected by prolonged
fume or particulate matter exposure.
CHRONIC OVEREXPOSURE: Chronic exposure to alloyed element fumes/dusts can result in lesions on the skin and
mucous membranes, siderosis, bronchitis, pneumonitis, lack of coordination and edema of the lungs.
ACUTE OVEREXPOSURE: See above.
CARCINOGENICITY: Nickel, Chromium, Carbon Black, and Cobalt are potentially carcinogenic.

4. First Aid Measures
EYES: Flush thoroughly with running water to remove particulate; obtain medical attention.
SKIN: Remove particles by washing thoroughly with soap and water. Seek medical attention if
condition persists.
INHALATION: Remove to fresh air; if condition continues, consult a physician.
INGESTION: If significant amounts of metal are ingested, consult physician.
5. Fire Fighting Measures
FLAMMABLE PROPERTIES: Non-flammable.
Flash Point: Not available. Method Used: Not applicable.
Flammable Limits (% by Volume in Air):
Lower: None. Upper: None.
AUTO-IGNITION TEMPERATURE: Not applicable.
HAZARDOUS COMBUSTION PRODUCTS: Not available.
EXTINGUISHING MEDIA: Does not present fire or explosion hazards under normal conditions.
Use dry powder or sand on molten metal. Do not use water on molten metal or fires caused by
fine metal particles.
FIREFIGHTING INSTRUCTIONS: Stainless products do not present fire or explosion hazards
under normal conditions. Fine metal particles such as produced in grinding or sawing can burn.
High concentrations of metallic fines in the air may present an explosion hazard.
6. Accidental Release Measures
SMALL/LARGE SPILL: Fine turnings and small chips should be swept or vacuumed. Scrap metal
can be reclaimed for re-use.
7. Handling and Storage
HANDLING: In welding, precautions should be taken for airborne contaminants which may
originate from components of the welding rod. Arc or spark generated when welding or burning
could be a source of ignition for combustion and flammable materials.
STORAGE: Keep container closed.
8. Exposure Controls/Personal Protection
ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Not available.
RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Appropriate dust/mist/fume respirator should be used to avoid
excessive inhalation of particulates. If exposure limits are reached or exceeded, use NIOSH
approved equipment.
SKIN AND HAND PROTECTION: Protective gloves should be worn as required for welding,
burning or handling operations.
EYE AND FACE PROTECTION: Safety glasses should be worn when grinding or cutting. Face
shields should be worn when welding or cutting.
OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: As required depending on operations and safety codes.

CHEMICAL STABILITY: Stable.
INCOMPATIBILITY: Reacts with strong acids to form hydrogen gas. Stainless steel at
temperatures above the melting point may liberate fumes containing oxides of iron and alloying
elements.
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: Metallic dust or fumes may be produced during
welding, burning, grinding and possibly machining. Refer to ANSI Z49.1..
