TOXICOLOGICAL PROPERTIES

ROUTES OF ENTRY:

SKIN CONTACT: None

SKIN ABSORPTION: None
EYE: Initial exposure may include irritation of the eyes.

INHALATION: Vapors are a strong irritant to the pulmonary tract. Initial
symptoms of inhalation may be moderate and include irritation of the eyes and
throat, tightness of the chest, headache, nausea and gradual loss of strength.
Severe symptoms may be delayed (possibly for several hours) and include
cyanosis, increased difficulty in breathing, irregular respiration, lassitude and
possible eventual death due to pulmonary edema in untreated cases. Due to low
solubility in water, the nitrogen oxides are only slightly irritating to the mucous
membrane of the upper respiratory tract. Their warning power is therefore low,
and dangerous amounts of the fumes may be breathed before any real
discomfort is noticed.

INGESTION: None

ACUTE OVER EXPOSURE EFFECTS: The vapor is highly toxic and hazardous
because of its ability to cause delayed chemical pneumonitis and pulmonary
edema. The absence of marked acute irritation of nitric oxide limits its warning
properties.

CHRONIC OVER EXPOSURE EFFECTS: Chronic or repeated exposure may
cause a permanent decrease in pulmonary function (silo filler's disease).

EXPOSURE LIMITS: TWA = 25 molar ppm

IRRITANCY OF PRODUCT: See Eye, above.

SENSITIZATION TO MATERIAL: None known

CARCINOGENICITY, REPRODUCTIVE EFFECTS: None known

TERATOGENICITY, MUTAGENICITY: Mutation in mammalian somatic cells -
rat - inhalation 27 ppm/3 hours continuously

TOXICOLOGICALLY SYNERGISTIC PRODUCTS: None known

PREVENTIVE MEASURES

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Rubber or Teflon庐 gloves. Safety
goggles or safety glasses. Safety shoes eyewash "fountain".

SPECIFIC ENGINEERING CONTROLS: Nitric oxide is noncorrosive and most
common structural materials may be used. However,in the presence of moisture
and oxygen, corrosive conditions will develop as a result of the formation of nitric
and nitrous acids. Prior to use, systems to contain nitric oxide must first be
purged with an inert gas. Where air contamination cannot be eliminated,
stainless steel materials should be used.

LEAK AND SPILL PROCEDURES: EVACUATE ALL PERSONNEL FROM
AFFECTED AREA.
Use appropriate protective equipment. If leak is in user's equipment, be certain to
purge piping with an inert gas prior to attempting repairs. If leak is on container or
container valve, contact the closest MEGS location.

WASTE DISPOSAL: Do not attempt to dispose of waste or unused quantities.
Return in the shipping container properly labeled, with any valve outlet plugs or
caps secured and valve protection cap in place to MEGS for proper disposal. For
emergency disposal, contact the closest MEGS location.

HANDLING PROCEDURES AND EQUIPMENT: USE ONLY IN WELL-
VENTILATED AREAS.
Valve protection caps must remain in place unless container is secured with
valve outlet piped to the point of use. Do not drag, slide or roll cylinders. Use a
suitable hand truck for cylinder movement. Use a pressure regulator when
connecting cylinder to lower pressure piping or systems. Do not heat cylinder by
any means to increase the discharge rate of product from the cylinder. Use a
check valve or trap in the discharge line to prevent hazardous back flow into the
cylinder. Do not tamper with (valve) safety device. Close valve after each use
and when empty.

STORAGE REQUIREMENTS: Protect cylinders from physical damage. Store in
cool, dry, well-ventilated area of non combustible construction away from heavily
trafficked areas and emergency exits. Do not allow the temperature where
cylinders are stored to exceed 52掳C. Cylinders must be stored upright and firmly
secured to prevent falling or being knocked over. Full and empty cylinders should
be segregated. Use a "first in - first out" inventory system to prevent full cylinders
being stored for excessive periods of time.

TDG CLASSIFICATION: 2.3 (5.1) (8)

WHMIS CLASSIFICATION: A, C, D1

SPECIAL SHIPPING INFORMATION: Always secure cylinders in an upright
position before transporting them. NEVER transport cylinders in trunks of
vehicles, enclosed vans, truck cabs or in passenger compartments. Transport
cylinders secured in open flatbed or in open pick-up type vehicles.

FIRST AID MEASURES

SPECIFIC FIRST AID PROCEDURES: PROMPT MEDICAL ATTENTION IS
MANDATORY IN ALL CASES OF OVEREXPOSURE TO NITRIC OXIDE.
RESCUE PERSONNEL SHOULD BE EQUIPPED WITH SELF-CONTAINED
BREATHING APPARATUS.

INHALATION: Conscious persons should be carried (not assisted) to an
uncontaminated area and breath fresh air supplement with oxygen. Keep the
patient warm, quiet, and under competent medical observation until the danger of
the delayed pulmonary edema has passed (at least 72 hours). Any physical
exertion during this period should be discouraged as it may increase the severity
of the pulmonary edema or chemical pneumonitis. Bed rest is recommended.
Unconscious persons should be moved to an uncontaminated area, given
assisted resuscitation and supplemental oxygen. Once respiration has been
restored they should be treated as above.

EYE CONTACT: PERSONS WITH POTENTIAL EXPOSURE TO NITRIC OXIDE
SHOULD NOT WEAR CONTACT LENSES.

Flush contaminated eye(s) with copious quantities of water. Part eyelids to
assure complete flushing. Continue for a minimum of 15 minutes.

SKIN CONTACT: Flush affected area with copious quantities of water. Remove
affected clothing as rapidly as possible.
