V HEALTH H AZARD DA TA
Health Hazards (Acute and Ch ronic):
To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of aluminum sulfide have not been
thoroug hly in vestigated and recorded . Alumin um com pou nds have m any com me rcial uses and are com mo nly fo und in industry.
Many of these materials are active chemically and thus exhibit dangerous toxic and reactive properties. Inhalation of fine aluminum
oxide particles is associated with shaver's disease (sax, Dangerou s Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition).
Hydrogen sulfide is a human poison by inhalation. Severe eye irritant and mucous membrane irritant. An asphyxiant. The
irritant action has been explained on the bases that hydrogen sulfide com bines with the alkali present in mo ist surface tissues to form
sodium sulfide, caustic. Hydrogen sulfide does not combine with the hemoglobin of the blood; its asphyxiation is due to paralysis of
the respiratory center. It is an insidious poison since sense of smell may be fatigued. The odo r and irritating effects do not offer a
dependable warning to workers who may be exposed to gradually increasing amounts and therefore become used to it (Sax,
Dang erous Properties of Industrial Materials, eighth edition).
Inhalation: Acute: SEV ERE IRRIT AN T A ND CO RRO SIVE. M ay cau se irritation to the nose , throat and mu cous m embranes.
Ch ron ic: Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause pneumoconiosis, coma and pulm onary edema.
Ingestion: Acute: SEV ER E IR RIT AN T A ND CO RROS IVE . Ma y cau se gastrointestinal irritation.
Ch ron ic: No chronic health effects recorded.
Skin: Acute: SEV ER E IR RIT AN T A ND CO RROS IVE . Ma y cau se irritation to m oist skin due to the lib eration of hyd rogen su lfide.
Ch ron ic: No chronic health effects recorded.
Eye: Ac ute: SEV ER E IR RIT AN T A ND CO RROS IVE .
Ch ron ic: No ch ronic he alth effects.
Routes of Entry: Inhalation? Yes Skin? Yes Ingestion? Yes Other? No
Target Organs: May effect the eyes, skin and respiratory system.
Carcino genicity: NTP? No IAR C M onograp hs? No OSHA Regulated? No
Signs and Symptom s of Exposure:
Inhalation: May cause throat dryness, coughing and burning sensation.
Ingestion: May cause nausea and vomiting.
Skin : May cause red ness, itching, inflam mation and chem ical burns.
Eye: May cause red ness, itching, inflam mation, watering and chem ical burns.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing resp iratory disord ers.
EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
EYES: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.
SK IN: Remove contaminated clothing; brush material off skin; wash affected area with mild soap and water; seek medical attention
immediately.
INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air; keep warm and quiet; give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention
immediately.
INGESTION: Give 1-2 glasses of milk or water and DO NOT induce vomiting; seek medical attention imm ediately.
VI REACTIVITY DATA
Stability: Stable
Incompatibility (Material to Avoid): Water and moisture.
Haz ardous D ecomposition or Bypro ducts: Oxides of sulfur and hydrogen sulfide.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.
VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES
Steps to be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: We ar appropriate respira tory and protective equipm ent. Isolate spill
area and provide ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA ) air filter and place in a closed
con tainer for proper disp osal. T ake care n ot to raise dust.
Waste Disposal Method: Dispose o f in accord ance w ith Loca l, State and Federal W aste Dispo sal Regu lations.

VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION
Respiratory Protection (Specify Type): NIOSH - approved d ust, mist, vapor respirator.
Ventilation: Local exha ust: To m aintain con centration a t low exposure levels.
Protective Gloves: Butyl or polycarbonate gloves
Eye Protection: Safety goggles
Wo rk/Hygienic/Maintenance Practice: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of
expo sure at low levels. Use go od housek eeping and san itation practices. Do not use tob acco o r food in the wo rk area. W ash
thorough ly before eating and sm oking. Do not blow du st off clothing or skin with com pressed air.
IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Precautions to be taken in Handling and Storing:
聜 Hazard Label Information: Store in cool, dry area.
聜 Store in tightly sealed container.
聜 Wash thoroughly after handling.
Other Precautions: Aluminum sulfide decomposes to hydrogen sulfide in moist air. Handle and store in a controlled environment
and in an inert gas such as argon.
