combustibles may cause ignition. Under fire conditions and at high temperatures, highly toxic oxides of nitrogen are emitted.
V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Effects of Exposure:
To the best of our knowledge the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of samarium nitrate have not been
thoroughly investigated and reported.
Lanthanides can cause delayed blood clotting leading to hemorrhages. Exposure may also lead to sensitivity to heat, itching,
increased awareness of odor and taste, and liver damage.
Sm all doses of n itrates may cause w eakness, general depression , headac he and men tal impairm ent. Larger doses m ay cau se
dizziness, abdominal cramps, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, convulsions and collapse.
Acute E ffects:
Inhalation: Due to its acidity, this product may cause difficulty breathing, chronic bronchitis, chemical pneumon itis, or emphysem a.
Ingestion: MODERA TE TOX ICITY BY INGESTION . Due to its acidity, this product may burn the mouth, throat and stomach.
Skin : SLIGHT SKIN IRRITATION. Similar rare earth nitrates in solution cause slight irritation to rabbit skin.
Eye: SEV ERE EY E IRR ITA NT . Similar rare earth nitrates in solution cause sev ere injury to rabbit eyes.
Sym ptom s may be delay ed 4-3 0 hours.
Chro nic Effects:
Nitrates, in gen eral, are not a d irect toxicant bu t are a health hazard b ecause o f their conv ersion to nitrites which in turn cause
methemog lobinemia.
Medical Conditions Aggravated by Overexposure: Skin and respiratory d isease; blood disorders.

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:
INHALATION: Remove from exposure, seek imm ediate medical attention.
INGESTION: GET IMME DIATE M EDICAL AT TENTION . DO NOT IND UCE VO MITING. If conscious, give large quantities of
water. Seek imm ediate medical attention.
SK IN: Wa sh w ith soap and w ater an d a larg e volum e of w ater for 15 min utes. Rem ove any contaminated clothing. T horoug hly
clean co ntam inated clothing and shoes before reu se. Seek m edical assistance as necessary , especially if irritation develops or p ersists.
EYES: Flush with copious amounts of water for 15 minutes. Eyelids should be held away from the eyeball to ensure thorough
rinsing. Get med ical attention if irritation persists.

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES
Steps to Be Taken in Case Material Is Released or Spilled: Wear appropriate protective gear. Sweep up into container for disposal
or recovery. Avoid creating dusting conditions. Ventilate area. Clean spill area with soda ash slurry and sweep into a drum for
dispo sal.
Waste Disposal Method: Dispose o f in accord ance w ith Loca l, State and Federal regu lations.

IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: OXIDIZER. SEVERE EYE AND MUCOUS MEMBRANE IRRITANT. Do
not get in eyes, on skin or clothing. Do not breathe dust, vapor, mist, or gas. Keep container closed. Keep away from heat, sparks
and open flam es. Store in tightly closed containers at am bient temperatures. D o no t store near stro ng redu cing agen ts or organ ic
ma terials (such as paper, wood ). Do not sto re in ordinary steel con tainers. Em pty container m ay co ntain haza rdous resid ues.
Flammable solid. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. Do not drink or eat or smoke in the work area.
Other Precautions: Dry pow ders can build static electricity charges wh en su bjected to the friction of co nve ying , mix ing o r sliding .
To prevent ignition, provide adequate precautions, such as electrical grounding, or inert atmospheres when material is used in the
presence of flam mable m aterials.

Wo rk Practices: Implement engineering and work practice controls to reduce and maintain concentration of exposure. Use good
housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or smoking. Do not
blow dust off clothing or skin with compressed air. Maintain a sink, safety shower and eyewash fountain in the work area. Have
oxygen readily available.
