Clear colorless liquid, gasoline-like odor.
REACTIVITY & CONDITIONS TO AVOID
Stable. Incompatible with strong oxidizing materials, heat and sources of ignition. Reported
to undergo explosive decomposition if heated above its boiling point to 100掳C. Requires
refrigeration.
FIRE HAZARDS
Flammable liquid, will emit toxic fumes of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. Firefighters
wear SCBA.

HEALTH HAZARDS
Vapors can be irritating to eyes and respiratory tract, hexane can be narcotic in high
concentration. Symptoms of over exposure to hexane -fatigue, loss of appetite, drowsiness,
dizziness, lung irritation, chest pain, headache, nausea, pulmonary edema, possibly fatal
narcosis. OSHA Std. (hexane) Air TWA 50 ppm. TLV 50 ppm. OSHA PEL not established for ethyl
ethynyl ether. LD 50(hexane)(oral-rat) 28710 mg/kg. LD 50(ethyl ethynyl ether)(oral-mouse) 2400
mg/kg. Hexane has experimental teratogenic, mutagenic and reproductive effects. No evidence
of carcinogenicity. This product is supplied for use in research and development only and must
be used by or under the supervision of a technically qualified individual.
FIRST AID
Remove contaminated clothing immediately and launder before reuse. Discard contaminated shoes.
For eyes, flush with plenty of water for at least fifteen minutes. Seek medical attention
immediately. For skin, wash thoroughly with soap and water, while removing clothing. Seek
medical attention. For inhalation, remove to fresh air. If not breathing give mouth to mouth
resuscitation. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. Seek medical attention at once. For
ingestion, give milk or water and seek medical attention at once.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Wear goggles, rubber gloves, protective clothing. Use only with adequate ventilation and/or
suitable respiratory protection. Avoid all contact. Requires refrigeration.
SPILLS & LEAKS
Remove ignition sources. Ventilate area. Equip personnel with respirator. Take up spill in
absorbent and dispose to incinerator or other suitable hazardous waste.
