APPEARANCE & ODOR
Slightly yellow crystals. May discolor on exposure to air and light. Odor of hydrogen sulfide
(rotten eggs).
REACTIVITY & CONDITIONS TO AVOID
Undergoes slow decomposition at room temperature, evolving hydrogen sulfide. Incompatible with
acids and oxidizers. Will liquify if it absorbs relatively small amounts of moisture.
FIRE HAZARDS
Combustible. Will decompose in general fire evolving noxious gas. Firefighters wear SCBA. Avoid
inhalation of fumes. NFPA # 3-2-1.

HEALTH HAZARDS
Irritating to skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Toxic internally and by inhalation of hydrogen
sulfide which may accumulate in closed spaces. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness,
pulmonary edema possibly death. LD/TD no data found. OSHA PEL/ACGIH TLV not established for
sodium hydrosulfide; OSHA PEL/ACGIH TLV (H 2S) 10 ppm, 15 ppm STEL. No evidence of
carcinogenicity.
SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
Wear goggles and rubber gloves while handling. Use adequate ventilation or suitable respirator
to avoid inhalation of fumes. Avoid all contact. Store in well sealed containers in a cool, dry
area.
FIRST AID
Wash contact area thoroughly with water. If eye irritation persists, see a physician. If
swallowed, give water or milk and get medical attention. Do NOT induce vomiting. Inhalation -
remove to fresh air, give oxygen or respiration as needed. Get medical attention.
SPILLS & LEAKS
Take up spill with absorbent. Ventilate area. Wash up thoroughly with water. Disposal to
hazardous waste.
