IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance Routes of exposure
WHITE POWDER. The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of
its aerosol.
Occupational exposure limits
TLV: (Respirable fraction) 2 mg/m3 as TWA; A4 (not classifiable Inhalation risk
as a human carcinogen); (ACGIH 2004). Evaporation at 20/C is negligible; a nuisance-causing
concentration of airborne particles can, however, be reached
quickly on spraying or when dispersed, especially if powdered.
Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Lungs may be affected by repeated or prolonged exposure to
dust particles. The substance may have effects on the lungs,
resulting in fibrosis (kaolinosis) and impaired functions.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Relative density (water = 1): 2.6 Solubility in water: none
ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
NOTES
This card applies to kaolin containing <1% crystalline silica. If kaolin contains more than 1% crystalline silica,
fusion temperature 1785/C.
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested.
Fitrol, Glomax, Kaophills-2 are trade names.
See also ICSC0808 Quartz.
Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See section Occupational Exposure Limits.
