Chemical Safety
1211 COPPER(II) ARSENITE

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance Routes of exposure
YELLOWISH-GREEN POWDER. The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its
aerosol and by ingestion.
Chemical dangers
Inhalation risk
Upon heating, toxic fumes are formed. Reacts with acids to
produce toxic fumes of arsine gas (see ICSC 0222). Evaporation at 20/C is negligible; a harmful concentration of
airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when
Occupational exposure limits dispersed.
TLV: (as As) 0.01 mg/m 3 as TWA; A1 (confirmed human
Effects of short-term exposure
carcinogen); BEI issued; (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: Carcinogen category: 1; Germ cell mutagen group: 3A; The substance may cause effects on the gastrointestinal tract,
(DFG 2004). central nervous system, kidneys, resulting in severe
gastroenteritis, loss of fluids and electrolytes, cardiac disorders,
collapse, shock and death. Exposure above the OEL may result
in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical observation is
indicated.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis.
The substance may have effects on the peripheral nervous
system, skin, mucous membranes, bone marrow, kidneys and
liver, resulting in neuropathy, pigmentation disorders, perforation
of nasal septum, lesions of blood cells, kidney impairment, and
cirrhosis. This substance is carcinogenic to humans. Animal
tests show that this substance possibly causes malformations in
human babies.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Decomposes below melting point Solubility in water: none

ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to water quality. This substance does enter the
environment under normal use. Great care, however, should be given to avoid any additional release, e.g. through inappropriate
disposal.

NOTES
Do NOT take working clothes home.
Scheele's green, Swedish green and Cupric green are trade names.
Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, EU classification, Emergency Response.
October 2005: see section Effects of long-term or repeated exposure.
