Chemical Safety
1209 MAGNESIUM ARSENATE

IMPORTANT DATA
Physical State; Appearance Routes of exposure
WHITE CRYSTALS OR WHITE POWDER. The substance can be absorbed into the body by inhalation of its
aerosol and by ingestion.
Chemical dangers
Inhalation risk
Upon heating, toxic fumes are formed. Reacts with strong
oxidants to produce toxic fumes. Evaporation at 20/C is negligible; a harmful concentration of
airborne particles can, however, be reached quickly when
Occupational exposure limits dispersed.
TLV: (as As) 0.01 mg/m 3; A1 (confirmed human carcinogen); BEI
Effects of short-term exposure
issued; (ACGIH 2004).
MAK: Carcinogen category: 1; Germ cell mutagen group: 3A; The substance is irritating to the eyes and the respiratory tract.
(DFG 2004). The substance may cause effects on the gastrointestinal tract,
cardiovascular system, central nervous system, kidneys,
resulting in severe gastroenteritis, loss of fluids and electrolytes,
cardiac disorders, kidney impairment and shock. Exposure above
the OEL may result in death. The effects may be delayed. Medical
observation is indicated.

Effects of long-term or repeated exposure
Repeated or prolonged contact with skin may cause dermatitis.
The substance may have effects on the skin, mucous
membranes, bone marrow, liver and peripheral nervous system,
resulting in pigmentation disorders, perforation of nasal septum,
lesions of blood cells, liver impairment and neuropathy. This
substance is carcinogenic to humans. Animal tests show that this
substance possibly causes malformations in human babies.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Solubility in water: none

ENVIRONMENTAL DATA
This substance may be hazardous to the environment; special attention should be given to aquatic organisms. This substance does
enter the environment under normal use. Great care, however, should be given to avoid any additional release, e.g. through
inappropriate disposal.

NOTES
Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested.
Do NOT take working clothes home.
Technical material is highly hydrated. Molecular mass and density will vary depending on the hydrated form.
Card has been partly updated in April 2005. See sections Occupational Exposure Limits, Emergency Response. October 2005: see
section Effects of long-term or repeated exposure.
