11 Toxicological Information
Acute
Swallowed: Very toxic if swallowed. Ingestion of even small quantities may cause death.
In Eyes: This product is severely irritating to the eyes and has a tear gas-like effect. It will
cause intense discomfort (severe pain, copious watering and redness of the eyes).
Effects will last long after exposure has ceased, and in severe exposure,
permanent effects such as corneal damage or blindness can occur.
Concentrations of 0.3-0.37 ppm resulted in painful irritation to the eyes in 3-30
seconds.
On Skin: Absorbed through the skin. Very toxic by skin absorption. Even minor skin
exposure will lead to serious health problems and death if not treated promptly.
Very irritating to skin. Will cause severe discomfort and may cause severe

Inhaled: Very toxic and irritating if inhaled. Even brief or minor exposure may lead to
severe consequences including death. Will cause discomfort to throat and lungs
and/or coughing which should disappear once exposure has ceased. Can be
readily detected at 0.008mg/L in air. At 0.16mg/L, produces coughing and
lacrimation. At 0.12mg/L, 30-60 minutes exposure can be fatal. Exposure to 4
ppm for a few seconds can incapacitate a person. Exposure to 15 ppm for a few
seconds can result in respiratory tract injury. Exposure of cats, guinea pigs and
rabbits to concentrations of 0.8mg/L in air for 20 minutes was lethal.

Chronic
Reproductive Reproduction fitness was not adversely affected in a study in which chloropicrin
Effects vapour was administered by whole body inhalation for 6 hours per day, 7 days per
week to male and female CD rats at concentrations up to 1.5 ppm through two
generations.
Teratogenic No treatment-related foetal malformations were observed in a study with rats
Effects: exposed by whole body inhalation to chloropicrin. The NOAEL for maternal toxicity
(0.4 ppm) was lower than the NOAEL for foetal toxicity (1.2 ppm).
Mutagenic Some evidence of genetic toxicity in bacterial cell in one of five tester strains in
Effects: the presence of metabolic activation system but was not confirmed in mammalian
cells. Chloropicrin did not cause damage to mammalian cell DNA but there was
some equivocal evidence suggestive of clastogenic effects.
Carcinogenic Insufficient data exist to classify chlorpicrin as to its potential to cause cancer in
Effects: humans. However, no neoplastic or tumorigenic response was produced by
chloropicrin in any species tested by inhalation, oral, and gavage dosing in 6 long-
term studies.

12 Ecological Information
Ecotoxicity: Toxic to fish. 96hr LC50 for trout and bluegill was 0.0165 mg/L and 0.105 mg/L
respectively.
Its mode of action suggests chloropicrin may be harmful to animals or birds.
However, a feeding study in chickens showed no adverse effects at doses up to
100 ppm for 120 days (highest dose tested).
Persistence Chloropicrin degrades to carbon dioxide in soils with a half-life between 8 hours
/Degradability: and 4.5 days. In water, chloropicrin degrades to carbon dioxide, bicarbonate,
chloride, nitrate and nitrite within 32 hours when exposed to light. Half-life in air
when exposed to simulated sunlight was 20 days with the end-products being
phosgene, nitric oxide, chlorine, nitrogen dioxide and dinitrogen tetroxide.
Mobility: Chloropicrin moves rapidly in soils. Can diffuse to 1m in sandy soil. Unlikely to
move rapidly in water due to its low solubility.
Environmental Hydrolysis is slow in the absence of sunlight and/or microorganisms. A high
Henry鈥檚 Law constant (2.05X10-3 atm-m3/mol at 25掳C) indicates chloropicrin will
Fate:
volatilise quickly from water. Expected to volatilise quickly from soils. Not
expected to adsorb to soil particles.
Bioaccumulation Low (Estimated BCF 23)
Potential:

13 Disposal Considerations
Disposal Methods: Dispose of chemical by use where possible. Product can be neutralised by
pouring or sifting over soda ash then mixing and washing slowly into large
tank.
