SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES: Move containers from fire area if possible. Cool containers exposed to flames with
water from the side until well after fire is out. Stay away from storage tank ends.
UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: For massive fire in storage area, use unmanned hose holder or monitor nozzles,
else withdraw from area and let fire burn.

Nickel Nitrate Crystal
SECTION V - HEALTH HAZARD DATA
THRESHOLD LIMIT VALUE: OSHA PEL - TWA 1 mg(Ni)/m 3 , ACGIH TLV - TWA 1 (Ni)/m 3 NIOSH REL - (Inorganic
Nickel) TWA 0.015 mg(Ni)/m 3 . This product is TSCA listed.
EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE: Acute Exposure: Dust may be irritating to the conjunctiva. Solutions are slightly corrosive
and may cause serious effects. Large doses of nickel salts may cause gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
Systemic effects may include giddiness, hyperglycemia, capillary damage, especially in the brain and adrenals, renal injury
myocardial weakness, and central nervous system depression. Rarely, inorganic nitrates may be converted to nitrates by nitrate-
reducing bacteria in the digestive tract, resulting in methemoglobinemia. Chronic Exposure: Repeated or prolonged contact with
irritants may cause conjunctivitis. Animal studies indicate that prolonged ingestion of some soluble nickel compounds may affect
the blood, bone marrow, thymus, spleen, kidneys, and immune system. Reduced body weight gain was also observed. Repeated
or prolonged exposure to nitrates may cause anemia, nephritis, and possibly methemoglobinemia. AT INCREASED RISK FROM
EXPOSURE: Persons with a history of asthma, allergies, impaired pulmonary function or known sensitization to nickel.
EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: EYES and SKIN: Wash immediately with large amounts of water or normal
saline, until no evidence of chemical remains (approximately 15-20 minutes). INHALATION: Remove to fresh air. Give oxygen.
INGESTION: Dilute immediately with large amounts of water or milk. SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IN THE EVENT OF
ANY ACCIDENTAL EXPOSURE TO THIS PRODUCT.
CARCINOGENICITY INFORMATION: Sufficient evidence (IARC Class 1), epidemiological studies conclusively demonstrate
an excess risk of cancer of the nasal cavity and lung in workers in nickel refineries. It is likely that nickel in some form(s) is
carcinogenic to man.
SECTION VI - REACTIVITY DATA

STABILITY: Stable under normal temperatures and pressures.
INCOMPATIBILITY (MATERIALS TO AVOID): Aluminum, boron phosphide
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: At temperatures above the decomposition point (136.7o C), it emits toxic fumes
of nickel oxide, and oxides of nitrogen.
HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Will not occur
CONDITIONS TO AVOID: Under specific conditions, exposure to carbon monoxide will produce nickel carbonyl - a highly toxic
gas.
SECTION VII - SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES

STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED: If nickel nitrate is spilled, it can be safely swept
or shoveled and returned to original container.
WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD: Place in an approved container and dispose of in accordance with federal, state, and local
regulations.
SECTION VIII - SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION (SPECIFY TYPE): A self-contained breathing apparatus with full face piece respirator with a
high-efficiency particulate filter.
VENTILATION: Provide local exhaust or process enclosure to meet published exposure limits.
PROTECTIVE GLOVES: Leather or rubber
EYE PROTECTION: Goggles
OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Protective coveralls and safety footwear are recommended.
SECTION IX - SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING AND STORING: Precautions should be taken to avoid repeated contact with
skin. OTHER PRECAUTIONS: Persons who are allergic to nickel should not handle.
