3. HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
The hazards of this material are essentially those of 30% Nitric acid, it is
therefore classified as oxidizing and corrosive. Any contact with this material
may lead to tissue damage.
There is no toxicological data available for the Ruthenium compound, but it is
not thought to present a significant hazard in comparison to those of the Nitric
acid component.

4. FIRST AID MEASURES
Over-exposure may produce the following symptoms -
First Aid
Inhalation - irritating to the eyes, nose, throat and respiratory tract, producing
coughing.
Ingestion - nausea and vomiting.
Eye contact - redness, irritation, blurred vision and pain.
Skin - redness and irritation with possible tissue damage. 聽 聽

remove from exposure and allow to rest in fresh air. Seek medical advice. 聽

attention.
remove contaminated clothing and wash skin with soap and water. If
First Aid - Skin
symptoms persist or tissue damage is evident, seek medical attention.
Launder clothing before re-use. 聽

5. FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES
Although the material is not flammable, it will assist a fire, producing toxic
fumes of oxides of nitrogen. The reside, ash or char left after a fire may have
catalytic properties and may promote the re-ignition of flammable materials
and vapours. Firefighters should wear protective equipment and self-
contained breathing apparatus. Use any extinguisher suitable for the
surrounding fire. 聽

6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Wearing suitable protective equipment, absorb the spillage in a suitable inert
absorbant (NOT sawdust or similar). Store absorbed material in a suitable
plastic container.
Wash site of spillage with large amounts of water. Do not allow wash water to
enter natural watercourses. 聽

7. HANDLING AND STORAGE
Good industrial hygiene practices should be observed. Use only under
Handling (JM)
conditions of a good level of ventilation. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Do
not eat, drink, smoke or apply cosmetics whilst handling this material. 聽
Keep in a secure store. 聽

10. STABILITY AND REACTIVITY
This material is supplied in a stable condition. The Nitric acid content may
present a reactive hazard following contact with combustible materials,
reducing agents, metals and many organic materials.
Users should note that the use of borohydride solutions to reduce Ruthenium
salt solutions to the metal is reported as producing solids which are explosive
when dry. 聽

194000 2.00 EC Current 03.11.1999

11. TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION (continued)
There is no toxicological data available for the Ruthenium component, the
following data refers to the Nitric acid component -
LDLo (oral human) 430 mg/kg, LDLo (unreported man) 110 mg/kg.
Users should note that Nitric acid is reported as producing reproductive
effects in laboratory animals.

12. ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION
The effect of ruthenium compounds on the environment has not been
investigated but the hazard is thought to be low. Ruthenium is not
concentrated by plants or animals. Natural processes will tend to produce
insoluble compounds.
However, the nitrate content of this material is such as to present a serious
ecological hazard. Do not allow this material to enter natural watercourses. 聽 聽

13. DISPOSAL
Return accumulated waste material to the refinery for metal recovery, or
dispose of in accordance with local and national regulations. 聽
