SECTION 6 - HEALTH HAZARDS
Acute Effects Dust may be a simple mechanical irritant to the eyes and upper respiratory system.
Chronic Effects Exposure to respirable crystalline silica without the use of a respirator can cause silicosis.
Signs and Symptoms of Exposure As with any inert foreign object, calcium carbonate may cause irritation if it enters the eye. Skin
redness may result if contact is due to abrasion. Silicosis is characterized by shortness of breath, coughing, diminished work capacity, reduce
lung volume and heart enlargement or failure.
Medical Conditions Generally Pre-existing lung diseases such as emphysema or tuberculosis may be aggravated by exposure.
Aggravated by Exposure
Chemical Listed as Carcinogenic or National Toxicology Yes I.A.R.C. Yes OSHA No
Potential Carcinogen Silica (Quartz) Program Monographs
Emergency and First Aid Procedures Remove from eyes as would be done with any inert foreign object. Seek medical attention if
irritation persists.
Route of Entry 1. Inhalation 鈥? Yes, this is the primary route of entry.
2. Eyes 鈥? No, but may cause eye irritation.
3. Skin 鈥? No, but may cause skin irritation.
4. Ingestion 鈥? No, not a likely route of exposure.
SECTION 7 - SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS AND SPILL/LEAK PROCEDURES
Precautions to be Taken in Handling and Storage Avoid work practices that create dusty conditions. Store in dry place to make
handling easier.
Other Precautions None
Steps to be Taken in Case Pick up spilled powder avoiding dusting conditions. Re-claim material for additional use.
Released or Spilled
Waste Disposal Methods Not a RCRA hazardous waste. Follow Federal, state and local disposal regulations.
SECTION 8 - SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION/CONTROL MEASURES
Use a NIOSH-approved (30 CFR, Part 84) respirator with dust filtering capability.
Respiratory Protection
Recommended Local Exhaust Use to capture dust at the source
Ventilation
Wear leather or cotton gloves Wear safety glasses with side shields or tight fitting goggles
Protective Gloves Eye Protection
under dusty conditions.
Wear coveralls as needed to keep dust off skin.
Other Protective Clothing or Equipment
Do not use compressed air to blow dust from clothes. Wash dust from exposed skin using soap and water.
