Extingu ishing Media: Use suitable extinguishing media for surrounding materials and type of fire.
Special Firefighting Procedures: Firefighters m ust w ear fu ll face, self-con tained breathing apparatus with full pro tective clothing to
prevent contact with skin and eyes. Fumes from fire are hazardous. Isolate runoff to prevent environmental pollution.

Unusual Fire and Explosion Hazards: When heated to decomposition, barium chromate may emit toxic fumes of barium and
chromium. Barium chromate is considered an oxidizing agent which may accelerate combustion.

V HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION

Effects of Exposure:

To the best of our knowledge, the chemical, physical and toxicological properties of barium chromate have not been
thoroughly investigated and reported.

Barium ch romate is a hum an carcinogen. Th e soluble barium salts are poisonous wh en ingested. Chrom ate salts are
suspected human carcinogens producing tumors of the lungs, nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. Chromic acid and its salts have a
corrosive action on the skin and mucous membranes. The lesions are confine to the exposed parts, affecting chiefly the skin of the
hands and forearms and the mucous membranes of the nasal septum.
Acute E ffects: Hexavalent chromium com pounds are irritants and corrosive.

Inhalation: May irritate the respiratory system and nasal septum. May cause inflammation and ulceration of the nasal mucosa and
larynx. May cause acute barium poisoning.
Ingestion: Oral ingestion is toxic and may cause irritation to tissues. May cause acute barium poisoning.
Skin : Corrosive and strong irritant. Chro miu m c om pou nds act allerg ens w hich cause derma titis, that varies from eryth em atous to
eczem a to exp osed lim bs.
Eye: Corrosive and stron g irritant. May cause irritation, eye injuries and conjun ctivitis.

Chro nic Effects:

Inhalation: Suspected carcinogen producing nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. Fine particles of chromium salts have been implicated
as a cause of pulmonary cancer. May cause changes in the number of wh ite blood cells and chronic barium poisoning. May produce
pulmonary sensitization. Large doses may cause cardiac and respiratory failure.
Ingestion: Large doses of hexavalent chromium to rabbits in their diet have caused albuminuria with desquamated cells, kidneys
showed hy peremia, fatty degeneration and n ecrosis. May ca use chronic barium poiso ning . Larg e doses m ay ca use h em orrh ages in
the gastrointestinal tract and kidn eys.
Skin : May cause ulcers, dermatitis and is topically corrosive.
Eye: May cause ey e injuries and conjun ctivitis.

Target Organs: May affect the hea rt, central nervo us system , blood, resp iratory system , liver, kidneys, skin and eyes.
Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure: Pre-existing resp iratory and skin disord ers.
Carcino genicity: NTP: Yes IARC: Yes OSHA: Yes

EMERG ENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES:

INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air, keep warm and quiet, give oxygen if breathing is difficult and seek medical attention
immediately.
INGESTION: Do not induce vomiting, seek medical attention imm ediately.
SK IN: Remove contaminated clothing, brush material off skin, wash affected area with mild soap and water, seek medical attention
immediately.
EYE: Flush eyes with lukewarm water, lifting upper and lower eyelids, for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.

VI REACTIVITY DATA

Stability: Stable

Co nditio ns to Av oid: None
Incompatibility (Materials o Avoid): Reducing ag ents, com bustible, organic or o ther readily o xidizable materials.

Haz ardous D ecomposition Produc ts: Barium , chrom ium and the ir oxides.
Hazardous Polymerization: Will not occur.

VII SPILL OR LEAK PROC EDURES

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled: We ar appropriate respira tory and protective equipm ent specified in
section VIII. Isolate spill area and provide ventilation. Vacuum up spill using a high efficiency particulate absolute (HEPA ) air filter
and place in a closed container fo r proper d isposal. Tak e care not to raise dust.

Wasted Disposal: Dispose o f in accord ance w ith Federal, State and L ocal regu lations.

VIII SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION

Respiratory Protection: NIOSH-approved dust, mist, vapor cartridge.
Ventilation: Use local exhaust to maintain concentration at or below PEL, TLV. General exhaust is not recommended.

Protective Gloves: Butyl or polycarbonate gloves Eye Protection: Safety goggles
Other Protective Clothing or Equipment: Protective gear suitable to prevent contamination.

IX SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storage: Store in tightly sealed container. Store in a c ool, d ry are a. W ash thorough ly
after handling.

Other Precautions: Barium chrom ate is a hexavalent chromium com pound, which are strong irritants and corrosive.

Wo rk Practices: Imp lem ent en gineering and wo rk practice controls to re duc e and ma intain c onc entration o f exp osure at low levels.
Use good housekeeping and sanitation practices. Do not use tobacco or food in work area. Wash thoroughly before eating or
smok ing. Do not blow dust off clothing or skin with comp ressed air.

The abo ve inform ation is believ ed to be co rrect, but do es no t purp ort to b e all inclu sive an d sha ll be used only as a gu ide.
