Inhalation: Irritant/Narcotic

Acute Exposure - May cause pulmonary irritation. High concentrations may cause dizziness, lack of

coordination, nausea, narcosis and other central nervous system effects. In mice, exposed to 16,000

ppm for 5 minutes, there was sensory irritation and one of four mice died; at 32,000 ppm, effects included

irritation and irregular respiration, and all four mice died within 4 minutes.

Chronic Exposure - Repeated or prolonged exposure to paraffin hydrocarbons may cause

polyneuropathy.

First Aid - Remove from exposure area to fresh air immediately. If breathing has stopped, perform

artificial respiration. Keep person warm and at rest. Treat person symptomatically and supportively. Get

medical attention immediately.

Skin Contact: Irritant

Acute Exposure - May cause irritation.

Chronic Exposure - Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may cause dermatitis.

First Aid - Remove contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. Wash affected area with soap or mild

detergent and large amounts of water until no evidence of chemical remains (approximately 15-20

minutes). Get medical attention immediately.

Eye Contact: Irritant

Acute Exposure - May cause irritation.

Chronic Exposure - Repeated or prolonged exposure to irritants may cause conjunctivitis.

First Aid - Wash eyes immediately with large amounts of water or normal saline, occasionally lifting

upper and lower lids, until no evidence of chemical remains (approximately 15-20 minutes). Get medical

attention immediately.

Ingestion: Narcotic

Acute Exposure - May cause central nervous system effects with symptoms of nausea, dizziness, lack of

coordination and narcosis. Aspiration into the lungs, with some alkanes, may cause chemical

pneumonitis, pulmonary edema and hemorrhaging. Octane isomers appear to cause pulmonary lesions if

aspirated into lungs of rats. In animal studies, aspiration of C6-C8 hydrocarbons resulted in almost

immediate death due to respiratory paralysis, asphyxia and cardiac arrest.

Chronic Exposure - No data available.

First Aid - Treat person symptomatically and supportively. Get medical attention and advice on whether

to use gastric lavage. Extreme care must be taken to prevent aspiration. A cuffed endotracheal tube

used by qualified medical personnel might be advisable. Keep head lower than hips to prevent aspiration

should vomiting occur.
