Routes of Entry: Inhalation-Yes    Skin-Yes   Ingestion-Yes

Health Hazards(Acute and Chronic):

Inhalation-Symptoms from exposure to iodine solutions are

not expected to be as severe as exposure to concentrated

iodine vapors, where symptoms may include severe irritation

to the mucous membranes and respiratory tract, excessive

tearing, sore throat, headache, and delayed pulmonary edema.

Ingestion-Large oral doses may cause systematic iodine

poisoning which may include abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever,

vomiting, stupor and shock.

Skin Contact-Symptoms are not expected to be as severe as

exposure to concentrated solutions, where symptoms may

include severe skin irritation resembling thermal burns.

Eye Contact-Splashes may cause irritation with redness and

pain.

Medical Conditions Generally Aggravated by Exposure:

Allergic sensitization may occur from prolonged or repeated

exposure to iodine. Chronic iodine overdoses have produced

iodism. Headache, fever, sneezing, salivation and skin

rashes may occur.

Emergency and First Aid Procedures:

Inhalation-Remove to fresh air. Get medical attention for an

breathing difficulty.

Ingestion-If swallowed, induce vomiting immediately by

giving two glasses of water and sticking finger down throat.

Call a

physician immediately. Never give anything by mouth to an

unconscious person.

Skin Exposure-Wash exposed area with soap and water. get

medical attention if irritation develops.

Eye Exposure-Wash eyes with plenty of water for at least 15

minutes. Call a physician.

SECTION VII - PRECAUTIONS FOR SAFE HANDLING AND USE

Steps to Be Taken in Case Material is Released or Spilled:

Clean-up personnel require protective clothing and

respiratory protection from vapors. Dike and cover spill

with soda ash or lime. Cover large spills with earth, sand

or inert solid. Collect or flush to sump for disposal.

Waste Disposal Method: Neutralized waste may be

containerized and disposed in a RCRA approved facility.

Ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations.

Precautions to Be Taken in Handling and Storing: Keep in

tightly closed containers, stored in a cool, dry, ventilated

area. Protect against physical damage. Store separately from

reactive or combustible materials and out of direct

sunlight.
