3. Hazards Identification

EMERGENCY OVERVIEW
Not hazardous in normal use. Can produce flammable gas (hydrogen) if the battery is overcharged. Exposure to
sulphuric acid can occur if the battery is damaged or its vents are tampered with. Shorting across the battery
terminals produces high currents.
For short and long term exposure effects see Section 11 Toxicological data

Eye Effects: None under normal conditions of use. See note below
Skin Effects: None under normal conditions of use. See note below

Ingestion/Oral None under normal conditions of use. See note below
Effects:
Inhalation Effects: None under normal conditions of use. See note below
Note : The toxic effects of lead are cumulative and slow to appear. It affects the bone marrow, kidneys,
reproductive organs, central nervous system, and developing foetus. The symptoms of lead overexposure are:
anaemia, vomiting, head aches, stomach pains (lead colic), dizziness, loss of appetite, muscle and joint pain.
Exposure to lead from a battery most often occurs during lead reclamation operations through the breathing or
ingestion of lead dust and/or fumes. Exposure to lead compounds may increase the risks of developing cancer.
Sulphuric acid is highly corrosive. Contact can cause severe burns in the skin and eyes. Ingestion of sulphuric
acid will cause GI tract burns. Exposure to sulphuric acid may occur if the battery case has been damaged or the
vents have been tampered with. Inhalation of mists may damage the lungs and cause pulmonary edema.
Exposure to strong inorganic acid mists containing sulphuric acid can increase the risks of developing cancer.
This sheet must be passed to any reclamation agent or smelter when the battery is resold/disposed.
MEDICAL CONDITIONS AGGRAVATED BY EXPOSURE: None known (for intact product).

4. First Aid Measures
Sulphuric acid : flush with plenty of water until medical help arrives. Call a physician
Eyes:
immediately.
Sulphuric acid : wash with plenty of water. Seek medical advice if the contaminated area is
Skin:
large or if blisters occur.
Sulphuric acid: call a physician immediately. If patient is conscious, flush mouth with water,
Ingestion/Oral:
have the patient drink milk or sodium bicarbonate solution. DO NOT give anything to an
unconscious person.
If contents of battery are inhaled, remove to fresh air. If breathing problems occur, a
Inhalation:
qualified individual should administer oxygen or artificial respiration as indicated. Seek
immediate medical attention.
The first aid measures indicated above will only be pertinent in cases of leakage or damage
Other Information:
to the battery or during lead reclamation.

5. Fire Fighting Measures
Extinguishing Media: No information available.
Fire and Explosion Hazard: Hazardous decomposition products of sulphuric acid: sulphur dioxide, sulphur
trioxide, hydrogen sulphide and hydrogen.
Special Protective Equipment No information available.
for Fire Fighters:
For Flammability Properties - see Section 9
6. Accidental Release Measures
If sulphuric acid is spilled from the battery, neutralise the acid with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sodium
carbonate (soda ash) or calcium oxide (lime). Flush the area with water. It is acceptable to discard the neutralised
acid into the sewage system.
7. Handling and Storage
Handling : due to the batteries low internal resistance and high power density, high levels of short circuit current
can develop across the battery terminals. Do not rest tools or cables on the battery. Use insulated tools only.
Follow all installation instructions and diagrams when installing or maintaining a battery system.
Storage: Store new batteries in a dry environment at room temperature. Store in their original protective
packaging.
